The Metabolism and Vascular Medicine Lab is an endowed chair that studies lifestyle-related diseases and arteriosclerosis broadly, from basic medicine to clinical medicine. Its research rests on the understanding that arteriosclerosis progresses on the basis of abnormalities such as those in blood glucose and blood pressure and ultimately leads to death, and that these abnormalities are mainly due to the accumulation of visceral fat. The lab discovered adiponectin as a molecule that directly links visceral fat and arteriosclerosis, and has studied its significance and function in humans. The lab proposed visceral fat syndrome and metabolic syndrome, and aims to clarify the mechanisms by which these conditions arise.

The Applied Stem Cell Medicine Lab studies pluripotent stem cells such as iPS cells and ES cells, as well as mesenchymal stem cells and epithelial stem cells. The lab aims to clarify the mechanisms of stem cell differentiation and maintenance of the undifferentiated state, and, based on these findings, to develop new medical technologies for curing diseases. The lab carries out translational research, which develops basic research into practical medical technologies. Using methods from cell biology, regenerative medicine, molecular biology, and tissue engineering, the lab welcomes students and researchers from a wide range of fields, including medicine, engineering, pharmacy, agriculture, science, and veterinary medicine.

The Diabetes Pathophysiology and Medical Care Lab is an endowed department of the Osaka University Graduate School of Medicine, and aims to provide appropriate diabetes care according to each patient's pathophysiology and comorbidities. Its main theme is how treatment should be carried out depending on age, serious coexisting diseases, and the pathophysiology of diabetes. The lab studies how to choose drugs for older patients, treatment of patients who also have cancer, delayed diagnosis and treatment interruption in lifestyle-related diseases, and factors that improve insulin resistance. Putting patients at the center, the lab sets out to share information on how best to manage diabetes for patients in a variety of situations, as a form of medical science for care.

The Endowed Department of Health and Developmental Medicine focuses on putting research from a variety of fields to practical use, with the development of therapeutic vaccines as its main theme. Believing that vaccines may in the future become one treatment option for lifestyle-related diseases that require daily lifelong medication, the lab conducts research and development centered on peptide vaccines. Aiming for applied research that goes beyond basic research, the lab conducts joint research and development with various labs in Japan and actively promotes industry-academia collaboration. It began in April 2010 as an endowed department of the Osaka University United Graduate School of Child Development, and has been an endowed department of the Graduate School of Medicine since April 2015.

The lab studies what happens in the adipose tissue and adipocytes of people with obesity, aiming to uncover the mechanisms by which metabolic syndrome develops. Adipocytes store energy when there is a surplus and release it when there is a shortage, which keeps the body's condition stable. In modern Japan, however, increased calorie intake and lack of exercise cause surplus energy to keep flowing into adipocytes, which is described as leading to conditions such as diabetes and dyslipidemia. Centered on pathological analysis of obese adipose tissue and functional analysis of adipocytokines, the lab aims to overcome lifestyle-related diseases.

The Endowed Chair of Advanced Vision Medicine conducts clinical research that evaluates eye diseases and systemic diseases using ocular imaging devices and clinical samples. Using devices such as anterior segment optical coherence tomography, which captures cross-sectional images of the cornea, the lab has newly reported that systemic diseases are associated with characteristic changes in the cornea. In addition to imaging-based diagnosis of diseases such as keratoconus and Harada disease, the lab explores methods to diagnose infections, tumors, and inflammatory diseases using very small samples such as tears and intraocular fluid. The lab is an endowed chair of the Graduate School of Medicine at Osaka University.

The Endowed Chair of Visual Function Reconstruction aims to reconstruct the visual function of blind patients using a retinal prosthesis. Centered on the development of Japan's own retinal prosthesis, the lab works on research and development of methods for evaluating visual function and for rehabilitation. The lab also studies neuroprotection, functional repair, and clarification of disease mechanisms in eye diseases, as well as the analysis and treatment of visual function.

The Endowed Department of Transformative Human Specimen Analysis aims to train people who can build new specimen analysis systems, as well as the next generation of researchers who aspire to a career in medicine. The lab is developing a collaborative research framework that links university hospitals across western Japan, and building a shared research foundation for infectious disease studies among hospitals in Osaka. It is also working to build a diagnostic framework using metagenomic next-generation sequencing for cases in which the causative microorganism is hard to identify. The lab also runs an educational program for high school students interested in infectious diseases and microorganisms.

The Endowed Department of Transformative Infection Control System Development is part of the Graduate School of Medicine and works on research using healthcare data and on training professionals in infectious diseases. To prepare for the next emerging infectious disease outbreak, the lab aims to train infectious disease professionals who are rooted in their communities and contribute to the world. In its research, the lab used claims data to analyze how a national policy promoting appropriate antimicrobial use affected outpatient antibiotic prescriptions for acute respiratory tract infections and subsequent hospitalizations for bacterial complications. For training, the lab creates educational content for residents and pharmacists, offers training for physicians in tropical infectious diseases, and holds seminars.

The Endowed Department of Transformative Medical Information System Development, part of the Graduate School of Medicine at Osaka University, develops an educational content delivery platform and innovative medical information systems to prepare for the next emerging infectious disease outbreak. The lab also serves as the training division of the Center for Infectious Disease Education and Research (CiDER), established at Osaka University in light of the lessons of COVID-19. The lab aims to provide a place where anyone can learn accurate knowledge about infectious diseases, anytime and anywhere. It is also working to build a medical information system that manages clinical data, imaging information, and clinical sample information in one place.
