The Photonic Biotechnology Lab conducts research on fluorescent proteins, bioluminescent proteins, and microscopy. The lab's website says it does research that is only possible by integrating optics, engineering, physics, chemistry, cell biology, developmental biology, botany, biotechnology, and pharmaceutical sciences. The news section lists papers on a fluorescent sensor that visualizes contact between cells and on photoswitchable fluorescent proteins. The lab's website presents it as the "Nagai Lab" and states that it accepts graduate students from the Graduate School of Frontier Biosciences and the Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, and also recruits widely from other universities.

The Biophotonics Lab was established at the Immunology Frontier Research Center as one of the imaging groups that collaborate with immunology researchers. Its main focus is creating new technologies to investigate interesting problems in immunology and biology, and much of this is the development of label-free techniques that probe molecular-, cellular-, and tissue-level information without staining. Of particular interest are the changes that occur in cells that have received immune stimulation. The lab also collaborates with applied physics research groups at Osaka University.

The Life Science Lab (Mitsuoka Lab) uses an ultrahigh-voltage electron microscope to carry out high-resolution structural analysis of biological macromolecules and their complexes inside cells. A key feature of the ultrahigh-voltage electron microscope is that it can observe thick specimens. The lab uses rapid freezing to fix biological macromolecules as they are in ice, and examines their structures by cryo-electron microscopy. From these structures, the lab clarifies structural changes and localization inside cells, deepening basic understanding of life science while also conducting research toward engineering applications of biological macromolecules. The lab is one of the research fields of the Research Center for Ultra-High Voltage Electron Microscopy at Osaka University.

The Nakajima Lab (Terahertz Science Group) studies terahertz spectroscopy, terahertz engineering, ultrafast spectroscopy, and metamaterials. Across the terahertz, infrared, and optical regions, the lab covers everything from fundamental physical phenomena to industrial application research. The lab also actively conducts joint research with companies. The lab is part of the Photon and Beam Science Division of the Institute of Laser Engineering, and accepts students as a cooperating laboratory of the School of Engineering and the Graduate School of Engineering.

The Laser Science Lab focuses on research and development of power lasers that deliver the world's highest average power. It also studies the development of new laser materials, new methods of laser oscillation and amplification, and beam control technologies. The lab calls a multipurpose system that can be designed on demand through modularization a “smart power laser,” and aims at a wide range of applications such as laser processing, fluorescence analysis, and laser fusion. On the lab's website, it is introduced as the “PLS group (Power Laser System Engineering Group),” and students are assigned to it as a cooperating laboratory of the School of Engineering and the Graduate School of Engineering.

The Iwamoto Lab (Photon and Quantum Energy Science research area) studies reactor design, fuel, and diagnostics to realize fusion energy using lasers. Fusion power is expected to be a clean energy source that emits no carbon dioxide, but the level of technology needed to build a fusion reactor is still low, and raising it is considered a key challenge. The lab works on topics such as cryogenic targets, blanket systems, laser fusion reactor design, and neutron diagnostics. It also studies fusion materials, as well as neutron source technology and neutron applications aimed at medical use. Research is carried out at the Institute of Laser Engineering, and the lab belongs to the Laser Energy Science Chair (a cooperating chair) of the Division of Electrical, Electronic and Infocommunications Engineering.

Masashi Yoshimura, Professor

The Photon and Quantum Devices research area (Yoshimura Lab) studies nonlinear optical crystals that change the wavelength of laser light, as well as devices for deep-ultraviolet lasers. Professor Masashi Yoshimura's group works on reducing crystal defects, aiming to realize high-power deep-ultraviolet laser processing machines through industry-academia collaboration. Assistant Professor Tomoaki Nambu's group studies fingertip-sized compact deep-ultraviolet laser sources and "unbreakable" optical elements for ultra-large power lasers. As a cooperating chair of the School of Engineering and the Graduate School of Engineering, the lab is in charge of research supervision for undergraduate and graduate students.

Hideo Nagatomo, Professor

The Radiation Hydrodynamic Plasma Physics research area is a lab at the Institute of Laser Engineering, Osaka University, and Professor Hideo Nagatomo and Assistant Professor Kazunori Shibata belong to it. In the Institute of Laser Engineering's introduction of its research groups, Professor Nagatomo is in charge of Physics Informatics in the Theory and Computational Science division, and conducts research that seeks to "understand plasma, from fundamentals to applications, using computational science and AI." In the graduate school, the lab is listed as a research area of the Laser Energy Science Chair in the Electrical Engineering Course of the Division of Electrical, Electronic and Infocommunications Engineering, Graduate School of Engineering, and students can conduct research in this area.

The Intelligent Reasoning Lab is a data science and AI lab that focuses on causal discovery. The lab aims to establish causal discovery as a standard analysis method in scientific research and in industry and policy settings, laying the foundation for a society where causal inference is used routinely. Working with researchers and practitioners in fields ranging from the natural and social sciences to engineering and medicine, the lab studies mathematical methodologies for uncovering causal relationships. The lab develops new methodologies that can estimate causal relationships from observational data, even in situations where interventional experiments are difficult.

The Knowledge Science Lab (Komatani Lab) studies spoken dialogue systems that can talk with people, using speech recognition and natural language processing technologies. It is a field with two sides: the engineering side of writing programs and building systems, and the scientific side of asking what it means for people to understand each other in conversation. Because the lab deals with the language people use, it also draws on knowledge from linguistics and social psychology. The lab belongs to the Institute of Scientific and Industrial Research and is positioned as a cooperating research group in the Graduate School of Engineering.
