The Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology Lab works on pathological diagnosis in the oral region and on research to elucidate human diseases. In addition to analyzing pathological tissue, the lab performs molecular pathological analysis using animal models of disease and cells. To raise the level of pathological diagnosis in the oral region and to train specialists, the lab holds joint conferences and training with clinical departments. The lab was formerly called the Department of Oral Pathology.

The Microbiology Lab studies how bacteria in the mouth, and pathogenic streptococci that enter the body through the mouth, cause disease. Dental caries and periodontal disease, the two major dental diseases, are both bacterial infections, and bacteriological research is regarded as an important issue in dentistry. Going beyond dentistry, the lab analyzes the mechanisms by which disease develops and carries out research that forms the basis for new treatments and preventive methods.

The Pharmacology Lab mainly uses animal models of disease for central nervous system disorders to clarify how pathological conditions arise, with the aim of developing better drug therapies. Focusing on the role that environmental factors play in the onset of disease, the lab combines behavioral pharmacology and molecular pharmacology to elucidate the molecular basis of psychiatric and developmental disorders and to develop new therapeutic drugs. The lab is in charge of pharmacology in undergraduate education, and in graduate education it aims to train oral health scientists through pharmacology grounded in neuroscience. The lab's greeting message states the hope to develop, in the near future, into research on "oral brain science" that includes the oral region.

The Dental Biomaterials Lab researches the development of next-generation dental materials and new regenerative and tissue engineering technologies, as well as the application of computer technology to biomechanics. Its research is divided into the development of dental materials, the development of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine technologies, and biomechanics research on dental materials. For many of its research themes, the lab also conducts joint research with various universities and research institutes in Japan and abroad, and with dental material manufacturers.

The Preventive Dentistry Lab conducts research, education, and clinical practice based on preventive dentistry, the science and technology of preventing oral diseases and maintaining oral function. Its purpose is to contribute to improving people's quality of life (QOL) and extending healthy life expectancy through oral health. In its research, the lab investigates at the molecular level how oral biofilms that cause periodontal disease become more virulent, and how the barrier function of the inner marginal gingival epithelium is regulated. Prevention targets not only disease but also the maintenance of oral functions, such as enjoying meals and conversation.

The Conservative Dentistry Lab aims at dental care that preserves teeth without extracting them, and conducts research toward developing and putting into practical use next-generation dental materials and treatment methods. The core of its research is to scientifically observe the clinical pathology of the various diseases in the field of conservative dentistry and apply this to methods of diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. Research includes building the foundation for caries treatment without drilling, bonding to teeth that have had root canal treatment, periodontal tissue regeneration, and analysis of oral biofilms. The acoustic environment of dental clinics and making the sound of dental drills more pleasant are also among the research themes.

The Periodontology Lab is a clinical department responsible for the prevention and treatment of periodontal disease (alveolar pyorrhea). Periodontal disease is caused by bacteria living at the boundary between the teeth and gums, and is a disease in which the periodontal tissue supporting the teeth is gradually lost. The lab investigates how periodontal disease develops and progresses, and, based on that knowledge, researches and develops new tests, diagnostic methods, and treatments. Recently, the lab has been developing treatments that regenerate periodontal tissue lost to periodontal disease.

The Regenerative Prosthodontics Lab is a clinical dentistry lab that conducts research aimed at restoring oral function in patients who have lost dental or jaw tissue. Building on advances in regenerative medicine and biomaterials, the lab pursues tissue regeneration research centered on somatic stem cells. The core of its research is the development of new medical devices and diagnostic technologies that are grounded in biology and go beyond conventional prosthodontics. At the Department of Oral Prosthodontics and the Oral Implant Center of the university hospital, the lab also treats patients with tooth or tissue loss that is difficult for general dental clinics to handle.

The Removable Prosthodontics and Gerodontology Lab conducts basic and clinical research related to removable dentures and dentistry for older adults. Its goal is predictive dentistry based on data science, and it also conducts research on implant-supported prosthodontics. Taking advantage of being part of a comprehensive university, the lab collaborates with a wide range of fields such as medicine and engineering, pursuing epidemiological surveys, AI, and mechanical experiments. Formerly called the Second Department of Prosthodontics, the lab was founded in 1953 (Showa 28).

The Comprehensive Dentistry Lab (Division of Comprehensive Dental Care) manages clinical clerkships and clinical residency at Osaka University School of Dentistry and its Dental Hospital. It also provides comprehensive care spanning multiple specialties and conducts research based on the various questions encountered in dental practice. Its research covers methods for observing hard tissues, age-related changes in dentin, and systems for dental education.
