The lab aims to understand how bones, cartilage, and teeth are formed and to gain hints for new therapies. It also carries out neurobiological research on taste. The lab combines histology, developmental biology, molecular biology, stem cell biology, mouse genetics, bioinformatics, and other fields without being bound by disciplinary boundaries. In undergraduate education, the lab teaches embryology, general histology, oral histology and embryology, and dental anatomy.

The lab studies the neural mechanisms that support sensation and movement around the mouth and face. The nervous system consists of the peripheral nervous system and the central nervous system (the brain), and it is responsible for perceiving touch and taste and for controlling movement through commands to muscles. The lab investigates the neural mechanisms of "sensory information processing," "motor control," and their integration, focusing mainly on clarifying the structure of neural circuits. It also combines analysis of neural activity with verification of gene expression to approach the research from multiple angles.

The Oral Physiology Lab conducts research to clarify the brain and neural mechanisms underlying jaw and oral functions and their disorders. Using both human and animal studies, the lab investigates the physiological mechanisms of functions such as mastication, swallowing, and taste perception, and of disorders such as sleep bruxism and orofacial pain. The lab aims to carry out research that can provide leads for other studies and be returned to clinical dentistry. Research is carried out together with graduate and undergraduate students, and graduate and undergraduate students who want to devote themselves to basic research are welcome to join.

The Biochemistry Lab centers its research on the development, differentiation, and metabolism of bone, cartilage, and joints. Aiming to build a foundation for developing new treatments for bone and cartilage diseases and for bone metastasis of malignant tumors, the lab studies how bone, cartilage, and joints are regulated at the molecular, cellular, and organismal levels. Using cell biology, molecular biology, genetic engineering, mouse genetics, and morphological analysis, the lab also creates knockout and knock-in mice with genome editing technology and examines their phenotypes. Under the slogan "Nurturing talent that will take flight to the world," the lab is also committed to educating young researchers.
