Malignant lymphoma is one of the representative malignant tumors, and its incidence is rising in Japan as well. The Clinical Research and Development Lab focuses on the relationship between malignant lymphoma and the surrounding non-tumor cells. It works to elucidate the molecular pathogenesis, identify the sites of action of existing drugs, and develop new treatments. Because the tumor cells themselves are immune cells, understanding the molecular pathogenesis can sometimes reveal therapeutic targets in unexpected places. The research is conducted jointly with the Department of Hematology.

The Clinical Genome Analysis Lab (Matsuo Lab) aims to improve treatment outcomes for hematologic malignancies. It analyzes the genomic abnormalities involved in onset, progression, and response to treatment, and works to elucidate the molecular pathogenesis. Based on these findings, the lab is developing new tests useful for diagnosis and prognosis prediction, as well as new treatments. Students, mainly those with a background in clinical laboratory science, learn genome analysis and molecular biology methods hands-on. The lab conducts joint research with Kyoto University Hospital and with medical institutions across Japan that participate in the Japan Children's Cancer Group.

The Biomedical Data Science Lab conducts research on applying artificial intelligence and machine learning to real-world problems, with a particular focus on time-series data processing. Much of the data in the world contains information about the flow of time, but because of problem-specific background knowledge and noise, no established techniques exist yet. Through real-world problems, the lab develops techniques to solve them. According to its department page, the lab carries out research and development together with the Big Data Medical Science group (Professor Yasushi Okuno).

Within the body, life is sustained by networks within and between many different levels of organization. The Advanced Medical Instrumentation Systems Lab aims to clarify such life phenomena, and the progression of disease as their breakdown, by visualizing whole living individuals at high resolution with imaging technologies such as MR microscopy. Using animal models of small fish such as medaka, the lab observes the same individual over time. Its work spans a wide range of challenges, from building disease models to developing instruments and analyzing images.

The Intelligent Medical Engineering Lab conducts research and education that applies informatics and data science, AI, and machine learning for living bodies and medical images to imaging, diagnosis, and treatment. Understanding the state of the human body and organs from partial observations is a fundamental challenge in medical engineering. The lab explores machine learning models and medical system frameworks that infer biological information beyond what was observed and generate information directly tied to treatment, aiming at applications such as surgery and radiation therapy. Undergraduates join the lab as members from their third year.

The Information Systems Lab works mainly on the software side of analyzing a wide range of health science data and building information systems, drawing on methods from statistics and ergonomics. The lab studies systems that make information sharing smoother among people receiving home healthcare and long-term care, their families, and the healthcare professionals who support them.

Medical physics is an academic field that applies the knowledge and techniques of physics and engineering to medicine to help maintain and improve human health. The lab pursues research and education especially in the medical physics of radiation, and develops research that centers on AI to help promote health. The lab aims to train medical physicists who can handle everything from introducing radiation therapy equipment to treatment planning and quality management, as well as medical physics researchers. The lab works together with the medical physics group of the Department of Radiation Oncology at the university hospital.

The brain cannot function with a single region alone; the functions of individual regions must be integrated through the circuits formed among them. The lab studies the higher-order brain functions that arise when the functions of brain regions are integrated, and the mechanisms behind the symptoms that appear when they are disrupted, with the goal of leading to improved symptoms.

The Immunology and Genomic Medicine Lab tackles fundamental questions in immunology, such as how vaccines are able to prevent infectious diseases. Students and postdocs here work at the forefront of research worldwide and seek to tackle the fundamentals of immunity. The lab aims to train independent researchers who learn experimental methods in molecular biology and immunology and have the ability to view life as a whole.

Launched in 2021, the lab pursues systems biology based on omics science centered on mass spectrometry. Combining genetics, biochemistry, mass spectrometry, and information science, the lab studies a wide range of organisms, including animals, microorganisms, and plants, through metabolism, which lies at the heart of life activity.
