The Cultural Research Creation Lab fundamentally rethinks how human culture is studied, without being bound by existing disciplines, and aims to create new research perspectives and methods. Going beyond collaboration with the social and natural sciences, it gives art studies a bridging role and seeks to expand cross-disciplinary research from the integration of the humanities and sciences to the integration of the humanities, arts, and sciences. It also serves as a hub that integrates the results of other research divisions, and works to share its findings in Japan and abroad and return them to society.

Without clarifying the mechanisms by which culture emerges, develops, and is passed down, it is impossible either to grasp the essence of culture or to analyze the state of culture today. The Cultural Genesis Lab seeks to clarify the essence of culture by understanding how culture differs across eras, regions, and fields in terms of its distinctiveness, while also exploring the level of universality that goes beyond that distinctiveness.

Once a culture is born, it moves across eras and spaces, changing form through repeated contact with other cultures. It is this kind of intercultural contact that has built human civilization. Building on the results of the Cultural Genesis Lab, the Cultural Interconnections Lab explores what scholarship should look like in the age of globalization by examining what happens in intercultural contact.

The Cultural Representation Lab comprehensively studies the systems of East Asian culture, centered on China, across both time and space, through both textual research and fieldwork. Much of culture has been passed down in forms other than writing, and extracting the ideas and values embedded in it requires methods specific to each field.

The Cultural Formation Research Division works with the Cultural Representation Research Division and plays a part in research that seeks to clarify the overall picture of the cultural system of East Asia, centered on China. Focusing on cultural practices expressed through language, the division traces the formation of cultural consciousness across the eras from five fields: the history of language, religion, thought, institutions, and New Learning.

The Humanities Informatics Innovation Center is the successor to the Center for Oriental Studies Documentation. It was reorganized in October 2023 so that its know-how in researching and digitizing historical sources written in Chinese characters could also be applied to modern and contemporary sources. Its main mission is to conduct information-science research on Chinese characters and to deliver texts written in Chinese characters widely to researchers through new media. The center creates various databases, and the Toyogaku Bunken Ruimoku (Classified Bibliography of Oriental Studies) is also available on the web.
