The Energy Economics Lab conducts research in energy economics and energy systems science toward the realization of a sustainable society. The research rests on two pillars: the technologies that support energy supply and demand, and the society in which people live and work. Covering scales from households, buildings, and cities to Japan, Asia, and the world, the lab combines perspectives from the natural sciences and the humanities and social sciences to explore what new energy supply and demand systems should look like and what institutions are needed to realize them. The lab belongs to the Graduate School of Energy Science, and students join at the graduate level.

The Plasma Physics Lab studies plasma toward the realization of fusion power reactors, which are expected to be a next-generation energy source. In future reactors, eliminating or slimming down the central solenoid coil is considered key, which requires another way to start up the plasma current from zero. Using its experimental device LATE, the lab became the first in the world to carry out everything from plasma ignition to the formation of a spherical tokamak using microwaves alone. The lab belongs to the Graduate School of Energy Science, and students join at the graduate level.

The Atomic Energy Lab conducts comprehensive engineering research covering hydrogen production technology, fusion reactor design, materials engineering, and environmental impact. It studies methods of extracting hydrogen isotopes from liquid metals, materials for fusion reactors, and the generation and measurement of neutrons using discharge-type fusion neutron sources. The lab also engages in outreach such as open lectures and exhibits using LEGO and visiting lectures; in 2017, students built a LEGO fusion reactor at the ITER Organization in France. The lab belongs to the Institute of Advanced Energy, and is a cooperating division of the Department of Energy Conversion Science, Graduate School of Energy Science; students join at the graduate level.
