The Diagnostic Pathology Lab is a diagnostic pathology lab that examines tissues and cells under a light microscope to diagnose disease. While placing importance on observing the morphology of tissue, the lab conducts research that links it with genetic tests and other examinations as well as clinical information. As the Department of Diagnostic Pathology at Kyoto University Hospital, the lab handles daily diagnosis and studies the pathology of tumors in various organs, transplant pathology, and the relationship between intracellular signaling and disease. The lab is also working on applying photoimmunotherapy to allergic diseases.

The Medical Chemistry Lab (Takeuchi Lab) studies how inflammation arises and is regulated, from the perspective of innate immunity. Immune activity is tightly controlled in the body, balancing the removal of pathogens against the risk of going too far and causing disease. The lab focuses especially on how RNA is regulated inside cells, and investigates it using genetically modified mice and other approaches. It aims to apply its findings to developing new ways to control diseases involving inflammation.

The lab analyzes the tumor microenvironment (the environment surrounding cancer) with its own original methods and comprehensively investigates the interactions between the immune system and cancer cells. The lab has established the idea that genetic abnormalities in cancer cells directly affect immune responses, opening up a new field of tumor biology. The lab approaches the mechanisms of cancer through a “from human to mouse” method: it extracts immune-related factors from comprehensive data on cancer patients and confirms their significance in mouse models. The lab is a division of the Center for Cancer Immunotherapy and Immunobiology.

The Clinical Cancer Immunology and Pharmacology Lab focuses on vulnerabilities that arise from genetic alterations in cancer cells (such as KRAS and TP53), and researches and develops new molecularly targeted therapies and immunotherapies. Aiming to completely cure hard-to-treat cancers, such as unresectable gastrointestinal cancers, the lab works to develop effective and safe treatments tailored to each patient. The lab welcomes researchers and graduate students from Japan and abroad, including those who hope to study overseas in the future. The lab is a division of the Center for Cancer Immunotherapy and Immunobiology.

Guided by the motto "World Class Care and Research," the lab works to "know," "protect," and "heal" the brain from the standpoint of clinical neuroscience. The lab aims to deliver the best medical care to patients with the neurological diseases that are increasing in a super-aged society, to clarify disease mechanisms using various neuroscience methods, and to develop new treatments and preventive methods. Through education at every stage, from clinical clerkships for undergraduates to postgraduate training and research supervision, the lab trains the next generation of neurologists.

Neurosurgery is the field responsible for diagnosing and treating diseases of the nervous system, including the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves, as well as diseases of the cerebral blood vessels. The lab is distinguished by three strengths: evidence-based clinical practice, the development of innovative treatments grounded in basic research, and the creation of new evidence through high-quality clinical trials. The lab carries out joint research with a wide range of departments inside and outside the university and brings the results back into patient care. It actively encourages study abroad in Japan and overseas, and it accepts students and physicians from both Japan and other countries.

The lab applies simulation science and data science, a new current of research alongside experimental science and theoretical science, to medicine and drug discovery. It works on the analysis of medical big data and medical AI using real clinical data from Kyoto University Hospital, as well as on new methodologies and foundation models for simulation-based and AI-based drug discovery using the supercomputer Fugaku.

Child health nursing explores support that lets children grow and develop as themselves, targeting children in a wide range of health conditions and their families, from the neonatal period through adolescence and young adulthood, regardless of whether or to what degree they have health problems or disabilities. An increasing number of children develop illnesses in childhood and need long-term follow-up. For the integrated practicum and graduation research, the lab arranges for each student to do their practicum and research in a field that matches their individual interests.

About 3% of newborns have a congenital anomaly, but the causes and mechanisms of onset have been clarified for only some of them. Biological Structure brings together knowledge from basic medicine, clinical medicine, and epidemiology to study congenital anomalies. Prof. Yamada also serves as a professor at the Congenital Anomaly Specimen Analysis Center affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine, and conducts research using the center's human embryo collection.

Neurorehabilitation is rehabilitation that combines knowledge from neuroscience, clinical neurophysiology, and rehabilitation medicine. The lab develops new treatments mainly to improve motor impairment after central nervous system diseases, and clarifies their effects and mechanisms. It also aims to develop findings from basic research to a level that can be put into practice in clinical settings, and to verify their effects together with therapists in the field.
