The lab studies the correlation between the oral environment and systemic condition, focusing on diseases influenced by periodontopathic and cariogenic bacteria. It analyzes patients' oral environment and systemic condition on a large scale and over a long period. Based on the results, it examines the effects of oral bacteria on systemic diseases from both basic and clinical perspectives. It also aims to spread awareness of how important it is to improve the oral environment in controlling systemic diseases.

The lab leads research and education on bioinformatics at the Graduate School of Dentistry. Under the bioinformatics platform initiative of the Strategic Council for Medical, Dental, Pharmaceutical and Life Sciences, it advances related research in an integrated way. It also collaborates with the Graduate School of Medicine, the Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, the Graduate School of Frontier Biosciences, the Research Institute for Microbial Diseases, and related departments at Osaka University. It also accepts consultations on research design using bioinformatics, and data analysis as joint research.

The Genome Editing Technology Development Unit views the genome as a "dynamic program" that changes over time, and studies how to control gene function from the outside. The unit investigates how the circadian clock affects the function of joints and bones, and aims for "time-targeted drug discovery", which intervenes at the optimal time in line with biological rhythms. The unit also develops technologies for creating its own research materials, such as mice and cell lines made with CRISPR/Cas9. The unit also supports researchers who use genome editing, for example by taking commissions to generate genetically modified mice and by holding seminars that include hands-on training.

The AI Research Unit widely applies cutting-edge technologies, including generative AI, to research in dentistry and oral science. Against the background of advances in AI technology known as deep learning, AI is increasingly being introduced in dental care for diagnostic support, image analysis, and optimization of treatment planning. The unit was established in April 2024 directly under the Graduate School of Dentistry, Osaka University. The unit also takes consultations on applying AI to research projects from faculty members, clinical staff, graduate students, and others in the departments of the school.

The lab is the division at the Dental Hospital affiliated with the Faculty of Dentistry that is responsible for research in medical informatics and for the introduction and operation of a commercial electronic medical record system. It is working on proposing next-generation medical records with medical-dental collaboration and hospital-clinic collaboration in view. Through international activities, it is advancing digital transformation (DX) across the whole hospital and the secondary use of accumulated data. It aims to realize the international circulation of dental healthcare information, and to build and put into operation mathematical, data-based disease prediction models, thereby contributing to better oral health worldwide.

The lab develops new organic reactions and reagents and, as applications of them, studies the synthesis of biologically active natural products and their derivatives. The lab predicts properties and reactivity from molecular structure, pursues a single reaction in depth, and discovers new reactions. The reactions it discovers are applied to drug discovery research, with the aim of creating new compounds that surpass those found in nature. The lab also aims to train experts in synthetic organic chemistry through its research.

The lab conducts research grounded in nucleic acid chemistry, with the aim of making nucleic acids useful as drugs. Within the lab, there is a chemistry-based group and a biology-based group. The chemistry group works on chemically modifying nucleic acids using organic chemistry to enhance their usefulness as pharmaceuticals. The biology group aims to treat diseases by controlling the function of disease-related RNA.

The Biological Structure and Function Analysis Lab (Inoe Lab) studies the three-dimensional structures of disease-related proteins and applies them to drug development. Mainly using X-ray crystallography, the lab investigates how proteins work at the atomic level. The lab has also developed its own technology for finding proteins involved in disease. By combining its work with other fields such as polymer chemistry, the lab is also developing techniques to accelerate cryo-electron microscopy and antibody-based imaging technologies.

The Quantum Life Informatics and Pharmaceutical Sciences Lab uses quantum chemical calculations to study the dynamics of biopolymers such as proteins, nucleic acids, and lipids at the atomic and molecular level. The lab applies the results to elucidating life science phenomena and designing drug molecules. By building a data infrastructure using the supercomputer Fugaku and applying artificial intelligence (AI), the lab aims to achieve the digital transformation (DX) of life science research based on quantum chemistry. The lab also works on analyzing the efficacy and side effects of drugs, epidemiological studies, and software development.
