The Health and Exercise Science Lab studies the mechanisms that regulate blood pressure and blood flow during exercise, using human participants. Prof. Katayama studies why blood pressure rises more in older adults than in young people even during light exercise, focusing on the muscle pump. Prof. Ishida studies how the strength and speed of thigh muscle contractions change blood flow in the femoral vein through the muscle pump. Prof. Katayama and Prof. Ishida belong to the Research Center of Health, Physical Fitness and Sports.

The Hematology and Oncology Lab studies blood diseases, from elucidating their pathophysiology to developing new diagnostic and treatment methods. It works on a broad range of themes, including hematologic malignancies, molecular targeted therapy, immunotherapy and cell therapy, and thrombosis and hemostasis disorders, with the ultimate goal of bringing all of it back to the bedside. Based on the belief that the truth lies in specimens obtained from patients, the lab aims to train Physician-Scientists who combine clinical practice and research. The lab recruits doctoral and master's students regardless of their university of origin or experience, and lab visits are welcome at any time.

The Cardiovascular Medicine Lab, a division of internal medicine that diagnoses and treats diseases of the heart and blood vessels, is engaged in clinical care, research, and education. In addition to clinically oriented research, it studies basic research on angiogenesis and vascular regenerative therapy, diabetic cardiomyopathy, and the molecular pathology and treatment of chronic heart failure. Clinical care is divided into teams and groups such as ischemic heart disease, structural heart disease, heart failure, pulmonary hypertension, and arrhythmia.

The lab provides clinical care and conducts research on a wide range of diseases of the gastrointestinal tract from the esophagus to the anus, as well as the liver, biliary tract, and pancreas. In addition to diagnostic and therapeutic techniques using endoscopy and ultrasound, the lab works on cancer treatment and on the diagnosis and treatment of immune-related diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease. Research is divided into the gastrointestinal, biliary-pancreatic, and liver groups, and also includes cross-organ research that extends beyond the digestive system, such as studies of the gut microbiota. In the professor's greeting, teamwork in clinical care and research with other departments, basic science faculty, nurses, pharmacists, and technicians is described as important.

The lab conducts research, clinical care, and education on a wide range of respiratory diseases, including lung cancer, interstitial pneumonia, and respiratory infections. Many intractable lung diseases have mechanisms that are still unknown. To elucidate disease pathophysiology and develop new treatments, the lab hopes to promote advanced basic research as well as translational research that only clinicians can do. Taking advantage of its strong network of affiliated hospitals, the lab also says it wants to advance multicenter collaborative studies that generate new evidence. Clinical care is provided as the Department of Respiratory Medicine of Nagoya University Hospital.

The lab's mission is to understand the actions of hormones, which cannot be seen, and to diagnose and treat diseases caused by their excess or deficiency. Its staff range from those aiming to become true diabetes or endocrinology specialists to those who want to pursue research to the fullest. The lab keeps in close contact with affiliated hospitals in the Tokai region, and has built a hospital-clinic collaboration system with lab alumni who run their own clinics. The lab says it welcomes anyone who wants to work in clinical care or research in diabetes and endocrinology.

The Nephrology Lab is part of the Department of Pathophysiological Internal Medicine in the Nagoya University Graduate School of Medicine. Its mission is to contribute to society through clinical care, education, and research in nephrology. The lab's clinical care covers all kidney-related conditions, including nephritis, nephrotic syndrome, chronic kidney disease (CKD), acute kidney injury, diabetic kidney disease, and polycystic kidney disease. With the goal of "research with the power to change kidney disease care worldwide," the lab conducts both clinical research and basic research. The lab places importance on educating young physicians and trains clinicians through a unified program.

The Surgical Oncology Lab is part of Gastroenterological and Oncological Surgery at Nagoya University Hospital and works on the surgical treatment of cancer. In the former Surgery I, the previous professor and the professor before that were pioneers in the surgical treatment of biliary tract cancer, mainly perihilar cholangiocarcinoma, developing surgical techniques and improving their safety. Gastroenterological and Oncological Surgery also treats esophageal, gastric, and colorectal cancer and retroperitoneal tumors. In the surgical areas of the esophagus, stomach, colon, liver, and pancreas, the lab decides case by case whether to perform laparoscopic or robotic surgery. In 2023, Surgery I and Surgery II were merged into "one surgery department," and the lab's website is now shared as Gastroenterological and Oncological Surgery.

The Vascular Surgery Lab is a vascular surgery department that treats diseases of the blood vessels other than those of the brain and heart (including diseases of the lymphatic vessels), and works on clinical care, research, and education. The lab aims to train physicians who can perform not only open surgery but also endovascular treatment, such as endovascular stent graft repair, at a high level of quality. The lab values basic research that returns to clinical questions arising in daily practice, and advances translational research from basic science to the clinic. It is the first stand-alone vascular surgery department in Japan, having become independent from Nagoya University's Surgery I department.

As the Department of Gastroenterological and Oncological Surgery at Nagoya University Hospital, the lab works in two groups: gastrointestinal surgery and hepatobiliary-pancreatic surgery. In 2023, the lab merged the Department of Surgical Oncology (First Department of Surgery) and the Department of Gastroenterological Surgery (Second Department of Surgery), making a new start as "One Surgery." For surgery of the esophagus, stomach, colon, liver, and pancreas, the lab carefully determines whether surgery is indicated in each case, and also performs laparoscopic and robotic surgery. The surgical departments of Nagoya University jointly run a specialty training program, and information for medical students and residents is also available.
