The Ecology Lab uses field surveys to clarify animal behavior and ecosystems. Centered on field research, the lab teaches and conducts research on biodiversity, animal behavior, and the evolution of life in the Archean. One line of research uses biologging, which records behavior with devices attached to animals, to study how wild animals live. Another line of research uses microfossils from the Archean as clues to the ecosystems of the early Earth and their evolution.

The Climate Science Lab studies the mechanisms of climate and global environmental change, including global warming, with a focus on atmospheric composition and changes in snow and ice. It aims to clarify and predict variations in atmospheric constituents such as greenhouse gases, ozone, and aerosols, as well as variations in snow and ice. Using field observations, satellite data analysis, and numerical simulation, the lab provides education and research ranging from fundamentals to applications. This site is for the Atmospheric and Hydrospheric Sciences group, and the Climate Science Lab is presented as one lab within that group, in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, Graduate School of Environmental Studies.

The Environmental Functional Materials Lab conducts research and education aimed at a sustainable society, working to understand the functions of limited resources and to bring them out fully. It works on new energy technologies, environmental information systems, and the development and management of environmental functional materials. It also covers the assessment, conservation, and restoration of ecosystems in watersheds, regions, and soils. The lab belongs to the Sustainable Development group of the Department of Urban Environment, and the department's page introduces it with the subtitle “Material and Energy Design.”

The Materials and Environmental Structure Lab views the city as one element of the Earth and studies the structure and state of materials. Its foundation is environmental science grounded in earth science (water and soil), ecology (organism behavior), and chemistry (materials). It treats the structure and state of materials across macro, micro, and nano scales, and also makes methods for investigating, analyzing, and solving environmental impacts a subject of education and research. The department's page introduces the lab with the added subtitle “Stock-based Society and Environmental Systems.”

The lab studies solutions to environmental problems across a range of spatial and temporal scales, including cities, nations, and the Earth as a whole. It takes a comprehensive view of environmental problems and addresses the technical systems and institutional design needed to build a sustainable national land. The lab belongs to the Sustainable Development group in the Department of Urban Environment, Graduate School of Environmental Studies. The department's page introduces it under the subtitle "Geosphere Environment and Risk Management."

The lab studies the appropriate management of nature, land, structures, and transportation systems in cities and regions. Such management is highly effective in reducing environmental load. The lab conducts research to properly plan and evaluate the measures for this management. It also conducts research on improving the seismic performance of steel structures.

The lab belongs to the Architecture group in the Department of Urban Environment, Graduate School of Environmental Studies, and conducts research and education on urban environmental management from the perspective of human activity. Based on multifaceted evaluation of living environments, the lab explores optimal design that balances comfort and energy efficiency. It also works on building new social systems through collaboration among citizens, government, and experts, and on creating urban environments through the effective use of resources.

The Architecture and Environmental Design Lab conducts education and research on the planning, design, evaluation, and technology of architecture and the built environment. The lab takes a comprehensive, systematic approach to education and research that incorporates contemporary perspectives such as ecosystem conservation, reducing environmental impact, drawing on social, cultural, and historical contexts, and collaborating with citizens. The faculty's areas of expertise include architectural planning, places where people feel they belong, the reuse of decommissioned buildings, architectural design, modern architectural history, and campus planning.

The Building Structural Systems Lab belongs to the Architecture Division of the Department of Urban Environment, Graduate School of Environmental Studies, and studies the structures and materials of buildings in pursuit of safe and sustainable architecture and urban environments. Its education and research center on design methods for various structures such as reinforced concrete and timber, large-span spaces, composite structures, and seismically isolated and vibration-controlled structures. The lab also works on performance evaluation and performance-based design of building materials, and on the development of new materials. It also aims to build resource-recycling structural systems.

The Environmental Policy Lab studies environmental policy, focusing on concrete policies and methods for companies and other businesses, NGOs, and individuals. The lab also communicates and proposes what it has learned from its research. Its education and research are wide-ranging, from theory to field surveys to projects on creating concrete policies. The lab belongs to the Department of Social Environment, Graduate School of Environmental Studies.
