To understand the solar-terrestrial environment comprehensively as a single system, the lab conducts research that combines the analysis of observational data with computer simulation. In the solar-terrestrial environment system, which consists of the Sun, the solar corona, interplanetary space, the Earth's magnetosphere, the ionosphere, and the atmosphere, various complex phenomena occur, such as the periodic activity of sunspots, solar flares, magnetic storms, and auroral explosions. By analyzing observational data from satellites and the ground, and through joint research with researchers in Japan and abroad, the lab works to clarify the whole picture of the solar-terrestrial environment system. It is one of the core research divisions of the Institute for Space-Earth Environmental Research.

The Cosmic Ray Research Division studies cosmic rays, the natural radiation that rains down on the Earth from space. Its work includes observations to find the origin of cosmic rays, research on open questions that span the universe and elementary particles, and research on the connections between cosmic rays and the Sun and Earth. The division is one of the core research divisions of the Institute for Space-Earth Environmental Research. The research fields of Project Assistant Professor Masatoshi Kobayashi are astroparticle physics, dark matter searches, and neutrinos. In collaboration with the Graduate School of Science and the Kobayashi-Maskawa Institute for the Origin of Particles and the Universe, the division works to train researchers who can move freely among three fields: astrophysics, particle and nuclear physics, and geophysics.

The division studies how the energy of the solar wind is transported to the Earth's magnetosphere and ionosphere, and how the magnetosphere, ionosphere, and thermosphere interact with one another. It carries out observations of upper atmospheric winds, the Earth's magnetic field, and radio waves on a global scale, and analyzes data from ground-based and satellite observations. Its research is carried out by three groups: the EISCAT Core Site Observations group, the Ground-Based Network Observations group, and the Space and Planetary Exploration group. The division is one of the core research divisions of the Institute for Space-Earth Environmental Research, Nagoya University, and is introduced on the institute's website under the name "Division for Ionospheric and Magnetospheric Research."

The Meteorology and Atmospheric Research Division is a division of the Institute for Space-Earth Environmental Research that conducts research in atmospheric science. Bringing together the knowledge and experience accumulated at the former Solar-Terrestrial Environment Laboratory and the former Hydrospheric Atmospheric Research Center, the division approaches its research from a wide range of perspectives. It observes the atmosphere with a variety of instruments, including spectroscopic observations of millimeter-wave radio waves and infrared light, radar observations of clouds and precipitation, and analysis of aerosols. The division's page lists the following labs: the Atmospheric Environment Variability Lab, the Cloud and Precipitation Sensing Lab, the Meteorology Lab, the Cloud and Precipitation Climatology Lab, and the Atmospheric Chemistry Lab.
Yoshiki Fukutomi, Project Associate Professor

The lab studies how energy, water, and materials move through terrestrial and marine ecosystems. Alongside field observations at multiple sites, it also uses global atmospheric reanalysis data, satellite data, and numerical simulations. The lab's page lists the Hydroclimatology Lab and the Oceanography Lab. In the faculty list, the research fields of Project Associate Professor Yoshiki Fukutomi are given as meteorology, climatology, atmospheric general circulation, and monsoons.

The Center for Orbital and Suborbital Observations is one of the centers at the Institute for Space–Earth Environmental Research that link specialized fields. Project Professor Joji Ishizaka uses remote sensing from space to study the dynamics of phytoplankton in the ocean. Phytoplankton are important for fish production and for material cycles such as that of carbon, and they can also cause problems such as red tides. The center investigates how human activity and climate change affect the waters around Japan.
