Vascular Surgery (Surgery I) Lab
Machine-translated · View original
A lab that explores vascular disease through both surgery and basic research.

AboutAbout the lab
Training first-class vascular surgeons and advancing vascular surgery
The Vascular Surgery Lab is a vascular surgery department that treats diseases of the blood vessels other than those of the brain and heart (including diseases of the lymphatic vessels), and works on clinical care, research, and education.
The lab aims to train physicians who can perform not only open surgery but also endovascular treatment, such as endovascular stent graft repair, at a high level of quality.
The lab values basic research that returns to clinical questions arising in daily practice, and advances translational research from basic science to the clinic.
It is the first stand-alone vascular surgery department in Japan, having become independent from Nagoya University's Surgery I department.
Key terms
- Stent graft
- A medical device with an artificial vessel that is placed inside a blood vessel. Endovascular repair using it is a minimally invasive treatment.
- Intimal hyperplasia
- Thickening of the innermost layer of a blood vessel (the intima).
- Aneurysm
- A condition in which the wall of an artery bulges outward like a lump.
NewsLab news
With a TAMBE proctor qualification obtained, the lab now has a proctoring system for both the TBE and TAMBE procedures
The first TAMBE procedure was performed at the University Hospital
The first TBE procedure was performed at the University Hospital
ResearchResearch themes
The lab conducts both basic and clinical research. In basic research, it has used rabbit and mouse models to study intimal hyperplasia and aneurysms. In clinical research, it works on topics such as improving the long-term outcomes of stent graft treatment.
*Illustrative imageControlling intimal hyperplasia
The lab has conducted experiments using a rabbit model of abnormal blood flow, which correlates well with the clinical outcomes of revascularization for lower-limb arterial disease. Among its findings is that intimal hyperplasia in autologous vein grafts is markedly enhanced under abnormal blood flow.
*Illustrative imageControlling aneurysm formation and growth
Using an aneurysm model in which angiotensin II is administered to ApoE knockout mice, the lab is currently examining the therapeutic effect of a 5-lipoxygenase inhibitor on aortic aneurysms. It also investigates aneurysm enlargement after endovascular stent graft repair through diagnostic imaging and pathological examination of the aneurysm wall.

Ratings and reviews reflect the experiences of individual current or former students, not the lab's official views. Whether a lab has reviews, or how many, says nothing about the lab itself.
