Hiroshi Abe, Professor
0 student voices
The Drug Discovery Molecular Design Lab is led by Professor Hiroshi Abe, a specialist in bioorganic chemistry, and centers its research on nucleic acid chemistry. The lab has published papers examining how the cap structure at the start of mRNA, the poly(A) tail at its end, and chemical modification of nucleosides affect mRNA stability and translation efficiency. It also has recent papers on designs that enhance translation of circular mRNA, lipid nanoparticles that deliver mRNA to cells, and chemical reactions that join DNA. The lab belongs to the Center for Integrated Glyco-Biomedical Research at the Institute for Glyco-core Research (iGCORE), and its graduate program is under the Graduate School of Science.

Imaging and blood biomarkers of dementia, especially Alzheimer's disease, from a glycan perspective; genome-wide association studies (GWAS) of N-glycome profile changes in brain disorders and diabetes; biomarkers of immune-mediated peripheral neuropathies (CIDP, autoimmune nodopathies, anti-MAG neuropathy) through analysis of autoantibodies, glycans, complement, and nerve injury markers; neuroimmunology, psychiatric epidemiology, meta-analysis, machine learning

The Bioactive Molecules Lab studies molecules that one organism produces and that affect another organism, focusing mainly on those related to sugars. Through purification and structure determination of molecules, analysis of their mechanisms of action, and structural modification, the lab aims to develop molecules useful for research, medicine, and agriculture. Using natural products that bind to glycans, and glycans themselves, as starting points, the lab works on developing drugs for infectious diseases and dementia, as well as tools for studying glycans. In 2018, the lab changed its name from the Chemistry of Physiologically Active Substances research group to its current name.

The Psychiatry Lab studies the diagnosis, treatment, causes, and pathophysiology of a wide range of mental disorders, including schizophrenia, depression, bipolar disorder, dementia, and autism spectrum disorder. Taking into account the needs of patients and their families, the lab aims to resolve everyday clinical questions and to develop diagnostic methods, treatments, and preventive methods based on an understanding of causes and pathophysiology. The lab takes a comprehensive approach from a bio-psycho-social perspective and places importance on collaboration between clinical research and basic research. Research projects are carried out in the following areas: genomics, psychotherapy, clinical pharmacology and epidemiology, neuropathology and geriatric psychiatry, child psychiatry, imaging, perinatal psychiatry (pregnant and postpartum women), and basic research.
Yoichiro Harada, Project Professor
0 student voices
The Cell and Organism Regulation Lab studies the metabolism of monosaccharides and glycans and its relationship to diseases such as cancer. Project Professor Yoichiro Harada studied the mechanism by which mannose, a monosaccharide, affects the metabolism of cancer cells and the effectiveness of anticancer drugs. Project Assistant Professor Kazuya Izumi is working on research that examines, from the perspective of glycosylation, the muscle atrophy of cancer cachexia, in which muscles waste away as a result of cancer. The lab is part of the Center for Integrative Glycomedicine in the Institute for Glyco-core Research.

Fumitaka Osakada, Professor
0 student voices
The Osakada Lab studies how the brain processes information from the outside world, learns, and chooses actions. Centered on physiology, anatomy, and pharmacology, the lab pursues multidisciplinary research that combines molecular biology, stem cell biology, imaging, behavioral analysis, and mathematical analysis. Based on these results, the lab aims to elucidate the pathology of neurological, psychiatric, and eye diseases and to develop preventive and therapeutic methods. The lab belongs to the Cellular Pharmacology field of the Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, and students from the School of Science can also join from the second semester of their third year.

The Institute for Glyco-core Research (iGCORE) is an integrated glycoscience research hub established by Nagoya University and Gifu University under the Tokai National Higher Education and Research System, bringing together world-leading researchers in glycochemistry and imaging (Gifu University) and glycobiology and glycomedicine (Nagoya University). The Nagoya University side consists of the Center for Integrated Glyco-Biomedical Sciences (Molecular Physiology and Dynamics Division, Cell and Organism Regulation Division) and the Glyco Big Data Center (Mathematical Analysis Division, Structural Analysis Division, AI Platform Division), and promotes large-scale projects such as the Human Glycome Project

Hiroyuki Kaji, Project Professor
0 student voices
Project Professor Hiroyuki Kaji of the Glycan Big Data Center studies glycoproteomics, which uses mass spectrometry to analyze glycans attached to proteins. Glycosylation is one of the post-translational modifications of proteins, and in a paper he states that many challenges remain to be solved in its analysis. He has published papers on developing analysis software for studying how glycans are attached and on comparing glycans across tissues. He is also a co-author of a paper from Japan's Human Glycome Atlas Project.

Large-scale data from innovative technologies such as sequencing and mass spectrometry offer new challenges and opportunities. We develop analysis tools based on state-of-the-art statistical modeling and machine learning, and conduct interdisciplinary research aimed at elucidating and understanding unknown mechanisms of biological systems from large-scale data. Specialties: statistical science, machine learning, bioinformatics
