The Pediatrics Lab engages in the clinical care of children's diseases and in research that starts from questions arising in that care. There are seven specialty groups: neurology, endocrinology, cardiology, immunology and allergy, hematology, neonatology, and infectious diseases. As the Department of Pediatrics at Chiba University Hospital, the lab covers everything from general care to advanced specialist care and emergency medicine. For diseases that are difficult to diagnose or treat with current medicine, the lab is developing new medical care.

The International Allergy and Mucosal Immunology Lab studies the mechanisms of immunity that operate in mucosal tissues such as the intestinal tract and airways. The mucosa blocks the entry of pathogens while selectively accepting nutrients and commensal microorganisms. When this regulation breaks down, it is thought to lead not only to infections but also to allergies and autoimmune diseases. The lab aims to unravel how immune cells interact with their surrounding environment and to create new therapies.

The lab conducts research and development on next-generation regenerative medicine. It has developed its own reprogramming technology that rejuvenates differentiated cells back into a progenitor cell state. In parallel, it studies how blood is produced (hematopoiesis), aiming to understand and control the process. By linking cell rejuvenation with an understanding of hematopoiesis, the lab aims to advance regenerative medicine and overcome blood diseases.

The lab studies the mechanisms underlying disease that are shared across lifestyle-related diseases and cancer. It aims to clarify the basis of multimorbidity, in which a person has several conditions such as heart failure, diabetes, and chronic kidney disease, and to apply the findings to diagnosis and treatment. Focusing on chronic inflammation and metabolic changes, the lab has also found that immune cells such as macrophages help maintain the state of organs such as the heart. It studies how the metabolic, immune, nervous, and circulatory systems work together to keep the body healthy, and how this changes with aging.

The lab works on building a mathematical foundation for analyzing big data in medicine and biology. It aims to understand life phenomena from the large amounts of data made available by advances in measurement technology. Using machine learning and applied mathematics, the lab develops algorithms for patient stratification and disease prediction. The lab also teaches courses at the School of Medicine, such as Introduction to AI Mathematical Sciences.

The Psychiatry and Neuroscience Lab studies neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism spectrum disorder and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The lab is run jointly by Chiba University's Graduate School of Medical and Pharmaceutical Sciences and the National Center of Neurology and Psychiatry (NCNP). A department director at NCNP serves as academic advisor and supervises graduate students' research. Chiba University graduate students conduct their research in the Department of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Research, National Institute of Mental Health, NCNP, in Kodaira, Tokyo. The lab carries out basic and clinical research on the etiology and pathophysiology, diagnosis, therapeutic intervention, and support for neurodevelopmental disorders.

The Next-Generation Disaster Therapeutics Lab (Onodera Lab) pursues two lines of work: epigenome research on T cells and research on preparing for disasters. The lab examines the T cell epigenome, focusing on enzymes that modify histones and on TET, an enzyme that oxidizes methyl groups on DNA. It also looks at the chronic phase after a disaster and conducts basic research that can lead to measures against lifestyle-related diseases and infectious diseases. The immunology team consists mainly of graduate students, and the disaster research team mainly of medical students.

The International Mucosal Immunology and Disease Control Lab studies how the immune system works in the mucosa of the digestive and respiratory tracts, which begin at the mouth and nose. Building on this foundation, the lab is developing oral and inhaled vaccines as an alternative to injections. As the Department of Human Mucosal Vaccinology at Chiba University Hospital, the lab conducts joint research with Shionogi & Co., Ltd. Its goals are a sustainable society through mucosal vaccines and a society where vaccination is safe and reassuring.

The Medicinal Chemistry Lab studies efficient methods of molecular transformation that are useful for synthesizing pharmaceuticals. Using metal catalysts and organocatalysts, the lab develops new ways of forming bonds and new methods of asymmetric synthesis. The lab is also working to shorten synthetic routes, for example through cascade reactions in which multiple reactions occur in succession. Based on the methods it has developed, the lab also works on the total synthesis of biologically active natural products.

The Synthetic Medicinal Chemistry Lab studies new synthetic chemistry technologies that freely transform biomolecules such as proteins chemically. Organic chemistry has developed as a discipline for making substances in a test tube, but synthetic chemistry that targets peptides, proteins, and cells is still immature. The lab aims to discover new methods of molecular activation that work under the conditions in which biomolecules function (neutral pH, in water, at room temperature), and to chemically modify proteins at will. The research is carried out with a focus on the unique reactivity of molecules the lab designs itself.
