Kazuhiko Kawamoto, Professor
0 student voices
The Kawamoto-Kera Lab studies computer vision, machine learning, and deep learning. The lab works on techniques that show in a human-understandable form what an AI based its decision on, and on methods for efficiently reusing trained models. It also studies the robustness of reinforcement learning used for robot control, and the understanding of human actions from video. The lab belongs to the Information Engineering Course in the Faculty of Engineering, the Graduate School of Science and Engineering, and the Faculty and Graduate School of Information and Data Science, established in fiscal 2024.

Shingo Kuroiwa, Professor
0 student voices
The Kuroiwa-Horiuchi Lab focuses on research in speech and welfare. The lab works on technology that reads a speaker's emotions and impressions from their voice, analysis of prosody such as intonation, and speaker recognition, which identifies who is speaking from their voice. The lab also does research in welfare, including analysis of sign language, which is used in communication by deaf and hard-of-hearing people.

Shigeo Shioda, Professor
0 student voices
The Shioda Lab studies mathematical models and probabilistic models, and their applications. The lab uses mathematical models to explain how posts spread on social media and how that relates to human behavior, the performance of communications such as Wi-Fi, and queues. It also works on position estimation and on building models that predict the onset of delirium in the medical field.

Hiroki Suyari, Professor
0 student voices
The Suyari-Mori Lab specializes in pattern recognition and machine learning, and conducts research by forming multiple project teams. Prof. Suyari's fields of expertise are information theory, complex systems, mathematical informatics, and artificial intelligence (medical imaging and language processing). The lab also studies a system that uses machine learning to automatically grade answers to written-answer questions.

Hiroo Sekiya, Professor
0 student voices
The Sekiya-Nguyen Lab aims for a new information and communication society that is mindful of energy and environmental issues, and studies wireless communication, power supplies for communication equipment, and neural networks. The lab works on communication methods that use multiple communication paths, power supply circuits that reduce power loss, and research toward making IoT networks AI-enabled. All of its research concerns the design and construction of "systems," and the lab places importance on always backing mathematical analysis with experimental demonstration.

Takahiko Horiuchi, Professor
0 student voices
The Horiuchi-Tanaka Lab studies the relationship between the physical world and the world of perception that people experience. It clarifies the relationship between the two using data from physical measurements, psychophysical experiments, and psychophysiological experiments. Centered on visual information such as images, the lab also studies smell and touch, as well as perception that combines multiple senses. The results can be applied to devices that measure human perception, the design of images and lighting that appeal to emotions, and the creation of realistic content for the metaverse.

Yoshitsugu Manabe, Professor
0 student voices
The Manabe-Yata Lab studies methods for measuring the shape, color, and gloss of objects using images. It works on 3D shape measurement, measurement and modeling of color and gloss, image recognition of color and material appearance, and mixed reality, which merges real and virtual objects. The lab also applies these measurement technologies to the digital archiving of cultural properties and other objects.

Yoko Mizokami, Professor
0 student voices
The Mizokami-Sato Lab is a vision engineering lab that conducts research related to human vision. Based on the characteristics of human perception, the lab investigates how we distinguish colors, how the appearance of objects changes under different lighting, and how skin color looks. The lab studies how color vision deficiency looks to those who have it, aiming to realize color universal design. It also aims to apply its work to the development of lighting that controls material appearance and to the development of cosmetics.

Ryoko Katagiri, Professor
0 student voices
The Katagiri-Hanai Lab studies data on human health. Professor Katagiri conducts epidemiological research, centered on using data to clarify "what we should eat to be healthy." Associate Professor Hanai conducts research on behavioral interventions and on connecting people with AI. The lab belongs to the Faculty of Information and Data Science, as well as to the Graduate School of Information and Data Science and the Graduate School of Integrated Science and Engineering.

Atsushi Shiraki, Professor
0 student voices
The Shiraki-Umezawa Lab studies directional volumetric displays, which show different images depending on the viewing direction, and educational materials that use visualization technology. The lab proposes a method of recording multiple images in the same space by laser-processing a glass cube. The other area is developing educational materials that use CG and VR to visualize celestial bodies, which require three-dimensional understanding, in order to support that understanding. The lab also welcomes ideas from students based on their own free thinking.
