This lab studies the evolution and ecology of ferns and lycophytes. The fern plants one usually sees are "sporophytes," but ferns have another life stage, the "gametophyte," which is usually less than 1 cm long. Both live independently, which is a fundamental difference from other land plants. The lab investigates how this life cycle affects community assembly and ecology.

This lab specializes in visual information processing, color engineering, and human informatics, and studies how people see things. People instantly obtain information such as the size, color, and movement of objects, but much about the mechanism of "seeing" remains unexplained. In particular, regarding the color perception of object surfaces, the lab explores the relationship between the physical properties present in the visual field and human color perception. As one interdisciplinary area of study, the lab also works on the theme of considering eyewitness testimony from the viewpoint of visual characteristics.
