The lab studies new low-dimensional nanoscale properties that emerge in atomic-layer materials fabricated on solid surfaces and in nanometer-scale inorganic and organic materials. It is a group that studies surface physics in the Applied Physics Course of the Department of Physical Science and Engineering, Graduate School of Engineering, The University of Osaka. The news section describes experiments at SAGA-LS and visits to overseas research institutions.

The Mathematical Planning Lab (Fujisaki Lab) studies mathematical theory and its applications for decision-making, which is about making plans, and control, which is about carrying them out. The lab works on modeling, analysis, and design of dynamical systems; performance evaluation and guarantees for randomized algorithms; multi-agent systems; data-driven control; and security and privacy. The lab aims to establish mathematical approaches to decision-making and control as methodologies in engineering and the social sciences.

The Nonlinear Mathematics Lab studies diverse phenomena that appear in engineering, information, and biological systems by describing them with nonlinear mathematical models. The lab works on understanding the nonlinear mathematics behind these phenomena and on developing methods for analyzing nonlinear mathematical models. It also aims to apply nonlinear mathematics to engineering and information systems. On the lab's website, it is also introduced under the name "Suzuki Lab."

The Energy Reaction and Transport Lab studies how to improve the performance of next-generation energy conversion devices such as fuel cells and flow batteries. The lab works consistently from fabricating materials through to evaluating and analyzing device performance. By clarifying the reaction and transport phenomena that occur in each process, the lab pursues the theoretical upper limit of performance. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name "Tsushima Lab."

The lab studies how artifact systems suited to a sustainable society should be envisioned, and systematizes methods for designing them. It systematizes design methodologies for the life cycle of artifacts and for product-service systems from the perspectives of the global environment, society, and the economy. The underlying disciplines are design engineering, life cycle engineering, and environmental studies. The foundation of the lab's cutting-edge research is compiled in "Sustainable Systems Design", written by Professor Kobayashi Hideki.

The Nano Fabrication and Metrology Lab (Takaya-Mizutani Lab) studies fabrication and measurement at the micrometer and nanometer scale, which form the foundation of manufacturing. In addition to precision measurement and fabrication using light, the lab works on AI techniques such as machine learning and deep learning, as well as measurement using entangled photon pairs. The lab's guiding philosophy is "Challenge and Surpass": to take on challenges boldly rather than settle for the status quo, overcome difficulties, and surpass oneself in research.

Grounded in mechanics of materials and solid mechanics, the Micro Dynamics Lab studies how the shape and state of things change over time. It focuses on the mechanisms by which microscopic structures change over time as they interact with the external environment and with the connections among their constituent elements. Through theory, experiments, and computation, the lab aims to elucidate these mechanisms and systematize them as an academic discipline. The Japanese term "dorikigaku" (動力学) corresponds to "dynamics" and refers to mechanics that deals with phenomena changing over time.

The Micro Thermal Engineering Lab studies processes of energy utilization and heat transfer using methods such as atomic- and molecular-scale simulation. The lab considers creating new ways of using energy and developing energy-saving technologies to be essential challenges for realizing a sustainable society. The lab independently develops computational techniques such as numerical analysis and deep learning, and also validates simulation results experimentally. The lab's website introduces it as a lab in the Thermal and Fluid Dynamics Group, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Graduate School of Engineering.

The Multiscale Transport Phenomena Lab is jointly run by the Yamaguchi-Kusudo Group and the Tsuji-Washino Group, and studies topics such as liquid wetting and the flow of granular materials. The Yamaguchi-Kusudo Group mainly uses molecular simulation to investigate how nanoscale structures at liquid surfaces, interfaces, and inside liquids determine surface tension, viscosity, wetting, and other properties. The Tsuji Group and the Washino Group investigate granular materials and flows in which particles and fluid are mixed, using numerical models such as the discrete element method. The lab accepts fourth-year undergraduate students in the Mechanical Engineering Course of the Department of Applied Science and Engineering, and graduate students in the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

The Laser Processing Lab aims for a high-level integration of laser science and manufacturing technology, and studies laser-based material processing methods such as joining, cutting, surface modification, and separation and removal, starting from the fundamentals. The lab clarifies what happens during processes such as welding and cutting, and aims to build systems for controlling and optimizing processing based on these results. The lab is developing new welding and joining processes for welding and joining materials with new functions and for joining dissimilar materials. In surface modification, which adds functions to material surfaces, the lab works on controlling how lasers and particle beams are used for thick-film processes such as overlay welding and aerosol deposition.
