Takahara Lab (Nelph) studies the physics and applications of photonic devices, including plasmonics, which is metal-based nanophotonics, and metamaterials, which are artificial optical media. Recently, the lab has focused on metasurfaces, which are two-dimensional metamaterials, especially dielectric metasurfaces made of silicon. In applied research, working jointly with companies, the lab has realized high-resolution color generation, all-optical switches, and radiative cooling devices. The lab operates the Photonics Center, which provides an environment for creating innovation through the use of shared equipment and exchanges with members from other fields.

The Nanospectroscopy Lab develops cutting-edge nanoscale optical analysis techniques and applies them to elucidate nanoscale physical phenomena. Because optical microscopes normally provide only micrometer-scale resolution, the lab combines near-field optics and plasmonics with Raman spectroscopy and photoluminescence measurement to create techniques for observing the nanoscale world with visible light. The lab also conducts research to create new nano-optical devices and techniques by manipulating the wavelength and spatial extent of light at the nanoscale. The lab's website also presents it under the name "Verma Lab."

The Nanophotonics Lab develops next-generation optical and spectroscopic microscopy technologies for applications in biology and medicine. Current research includes cryo-optical microscopy, super-resolution microscopy, Raman microscopy, deep-ultraviolet microscopy, and deep-ultraviolet laser microfabrication. The lab also emphasizes education in which students and early-career researchers gain hands-on experience with cutting-edge optical and spectroscopic imaging.
Yasushi Inouye, Professor

The Inouye Lab is pioneering the research field of nano-biophotonics, which integrates nanotechnology, biology, and photonics. Using nanomaterials such as metal nanoparticles, vibrational spectroscopy methods such as infrared and Raman spectroscopy that analyze and identify molecules, and nonlinear photonics based on ultrashort pulsed light, the lab researches and develops technologies for sensing cells and biomolecules with ultra-high sensitivity and high resolution. Main current research topics include nanoscale measurement of biomolecules inside cells using nanoparticle probes, highly sensitive biomolecule sensing using localized plasmons, and in vivo observation of photosynthesis using near-infrared light. The lab conducts joint research with a photonics center in Morocco and the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST).

The Nanoscale Condensed Matter Theory Lab (Diño Research Group) theoretically investigates various properties and dynamics of matter and trains researchers who will be active in this field. Its subjects are the quantum dynamics of excitations and reactions at solid surfaces, and the elucidation, control, and design of nanoscale properties of systems such as nanowires and quantum dots. Research is carried out using analytical methods and computational physics methods. Fuel cells, spintronics, biosensors, and solar cells are given as examples of applications.

The Advanced Condensed Matter Engineering Lab (Ono Lab) studies the automation and autonomy of experiments and measurements using robots and AI. The lab aims to automate difficult experimental operations such as handling powders and high-viscosity fluids, digitize the tacit knowledge of skilled experts, and build fully autonomous measurement and experimental systems. As foundations for autonomous experiments, the lab also develops physical and mathematical models for optimal experimental design, analysis of large-scale measurement data, and inverse design of materials. The lab accepts fourth-year undergraduates from the Applied Physics Course in the Department of Applied Natural Sciences, School of Engineering, Osaka University, and graduate students from the Applied Physics Course in the Department of Physical Sciences.
Tsuyoshi Sekitani, Professor

The Advanced Electronic Devices Lab studies how to precisely control the molecular structure, electronic states, and properties of organic materials, and applies this to flexible electronics and photonics. It also works on making integrated circuits of organic transistors by printing, and on developing conductors that stretch and shrink like rubber. Built on fundamentals such as quantum mechanics and solid-state physics, the lab lets students take part in every stage of device making, from material synthesis to circuit design, fabrication processes, and property evaluation. The lab's website introduces the faculty and staff of the Sekitani Lab, Uemura Lab, and Araki Lab together.
Hiroshi Yoshikawa, Professor

The Molecular Photonics Lab (Yoshikawa Lab) studies how to create new materials with laser technology, and how to control life phenomena to uncover how they work. Using lasers to gather and arrange molecules and atoms, the lab aims to create things such as electronic materials, pharmaceutical crystals, and artificial cells. It also investigates how the flexible functions and structures of soft matter arise, using optical measurement that does not disturb the weak bonds between molecules. The lab pursues interdisciplinary research spanning light, matter, and life, and welcomes students advancing from other universities and other faculties.

The Information Photonics Lab conducts research on creating information systems with new value, building on the physics and technology of light and combining it with information technology, mathematical science, and more. From four directions, namely computing with light, observing with light, connecting with light, and contributing to medicine with light, the lab works on optical computing, optical imaging, and more. Toward a human-centered super-smart society, the lab aims to develop technologies that connect the real world (physical space) and the virtual world (cyberspace). Although the lab belongs to the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology, undergraduates from the Applied Physics Course of the School of Engineering's Department of Applied Science can also join as members.

The Extreme Measurement and Nanoscience Lab (Yanjun Li Lab) uses scanning probe microscopes such as atomic force microscopes to study new physical phenomena that occur at solid surfaces and at solid-liquid interfaces. One of its goals is to clarify how catalysts work. The targets are palladium nanoparticles on an Al2O3/NiAl(110) surface in carbon monoxide gas, and gold nanoparticles on a rutile TiO2(110) surface at low temperature in gas. On the lab's website, it is presented under names such as "Yanjun Li Lab" and "Li Lab, Extreme Measurement and Nanoscience Area."
