The Stem Cell Biology and Developmental Immunology Lab studies the physiology and pathology of the microenvironment (niche) that maintains and regulates hematopoietic stem cells and immune cells in the bone marrow. Tissue stem cells are special cells that can give rise to various mature cells and divide repeatedly, and they are responsible for maintaining tissues and regenerating damaged ones. The lab discovered CAR cells, which form the hematopoietic stem cell niche in the bone marrow, and showed that CAR cells are also mesenchymal stem cells that give rise to osteoblasts and adipocytes. In the Graduate School of Medicine's list of departments, Prof. Nagasawa's department is also listed under the name "Stem Cell Biology."

The Aging Biology Lab studies the relationship between aging and cancer, focusing on the phenomenon of cellular senescence. The lab believes that the accumulation of senescent cells in the body with aging and obesity is one cause of inflammatory diseases, including cancer. It investigates how cellular senescence occurs and how it affects the body, with the aim of developing methods to control cellular senescence. On the lab's website, it is presented under the name "Hara Lab" as a lab of the Research Institute for Microbial Diseases.

The Signal Transduction Lab (Takakura Lab) studies how tissues and organs are formed, based on the functions of blood vessels and stem cells. It aims to clarify how blood vessels are formed and to apply the results to cancer treatment and regenerative medicine. The lab brings together graduate students and researchers with diverse backgrounds, such as medicine, pharmaceutical sciences, science, and engineering. It is a division of the Research Institute for Microbial Diseases, and is also listed in the faculty list of the Immunology Group at the Immunology Frontier Research Center.

The Cutaneous Immunology Lab is part of the Department of Dermatology at Osaka University, and its main themes, led by Prof. Fujimoto, are connective tissue diseases and immune diseases, including systemic sclerosis and dermatomyositis. In a greeting from May 2019, Prof. Fujimoto stated the intention to elucidate the pathophysiology of these intractable diseases and to establish treatments, working at Osaka University, a center of immunology. In the same greeting, Prof. Fujimoto also stated that the mission of the Department of Dermatology at Osaka University is to be able to provide the best medical care for every skin disease. The lab's website covers the entire Department of Dermatology, and its research page lists the research of each professor.
Kazuyo Moro, Professor

Moro Lab studies the immune cells called group 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2), which it was the first in the world to report, in 2010. The lab approaches its research from multiple directions, from basic research on how ILC2 differentiate, are activated, and are suppressed, to drug discovery and development. The lab is located at both the Osaka University Graduate School of Medicine and RIKEN, and students can conduct research at either one. At the Immunology Frontier Research Center, the lab is listed as "Immunology and Allergy," while on the lab's own website it is listed as "Moro Lab."

The Human Single Cell Immunology Lab, part of the Immunology Group at the Immunology Frontier Research Center, studies the diversity and function of Foxp3-expressing regulatory T cells (Tregs). Advances in technologies such as mass cytometry and single-cell RNA-seq have revealed substantial heterogeneity within immune cells. Tregs also take on a variety of functional states, and have been shown to partly mirror the characteristics of effector T cells such as Th1, Th17, and Tfh cells. Using single-cell technologies such as mass cytometry, the lab examines the diversity of Tregs in settings such as autoimmunity and cancer, and the effects when their function is impaired.
Daisuke Okuzaki, Project Associate Professor

Okuzaki Lab studies human immunology at the Immunology Frontier Research Center, with a focus on single-cell analysis. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the lab took part as a member of "Team Osaka University," performing single-cell analysis of cells in the blood (peripheral blood mononuclear cells). The lab also uses single-cell analysis to examine immune responses after vaccination and the host immune responses to viruses and bacteria. It also puts effort into applying the technology to connect basic research and clinical practice.

The Cellular Immunotherapy Lab identifies cell surface antigens that are specifically expressed on blood cancers, and carries out the full process of developing CAR-T cell therapies that target them. The lab has succeeded in developing a new CAR-T cell for multiple myeloma. It is now identifying new target antigens and developing CAR-T cells for acute myeloid leukemia and various solid tumors as well. The lab has also begun developing CAR-NK cells as an allogeneic cell therapy. The lab's website is a page of the Department of Hematology and Oncology, where it is introduced as the Cellular Immunotherapy Development Research Group.

The Microbiology and Immunology Lab, part of the Immunology Group at the Immunology Frontier Research Center, studies how the gut microbiota interacts with host immunity in diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), gastrointestinal infections, and colorectal cancer. Among resident microbes, the lab focuses on the mechanisms by which so-called pathogens cause or worsen disease, and the mechanisms by which beneficial microbes cooperate with host immunity to fight pathogenic microorganisms in the gastrointestinal tract. The lab also studies the role of diet in regulating the competition between pathogenic bacteria and beneficial bacteria, and the effects of nutrients in the diet on host immunity.

The Cutaneous Allergy and Host Defense Lab has studied how pathogenic bacteria contribute to atopic dermatitis through quorum sensing. The lab holds that, to understand the pathology, it is important to determine whether pathogenic bacteria detected on the skin are merely a "consequence of the disease" or are involved in the "formation of the pathology." Currently, using bacterial genome analysis and immunological approaches, the lab is analyzing the pre-disease state (mibyo) that is linked to the starting point of allergy onset. Using genome analysis technology for pathogenic bacteria, the lab also studies the mechanisms by which hospital-acquired infections caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria become difficult to treat. The lab belongs to the Immunology Group at the Immunology Frontier Research Center.
