The Host Defense Lab studies innate immunity, which acts earliest when pathogens invade and also contributes to inflammation and the establishment of adaptive immunity. The lab has led the world in elucidating how pattern recognition receptors such as Toll-like receptors (TLRs) specifically recognize and eliminate pathogens. Currently, the lab focuses on immune regulation through mRNA stability, aiming to clarify immunometabolism and the causes of various immune diseases and to establish new therapies. On the lab's website, it is introduced as Innate Immunity at the Immunology Frontier Research Center and as the Department of Innate Immunity at the Research Institute for Microbial Diseases.

The Immunochemistry Lab studies why the immune system, which evolved to protect the body from infectious diseases, causes abnormalities such as autoimmune diseases. Focusing on molecules that regulate the function of immune cells, the lab examines how they interact with biomolecules and pathogens to modulate immune responses. Methods include genetically modified mice, single-cell analysis, RNA-seq, and analysis of receptor-ligand interactions. It has become clear that neo-self, a new form of autoantigen, plays an important role in the onset of autoimmune diseases.

The Immune Regulation Lab, part of the Immunology Group at the Immunology Frontier Research Center (IFReC), studies how autoimmune diseases arise and the cytokine signaling pathways involved. The discovery of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and the elucidation of its receptor signaling pathway revealed that cytokines play an important role in regulating immune cells. When cytokine regulation is disrupted, immune cells can be activated inappropriately, which can lead to autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus. The lab aims to deepen the understanding of autoimmune diseases and cytokine signaling pathways, and ultimately to contribute to better medical care.

The Mucosal Immunology Lab studies the mechanisms of intestinal immunity, targeting inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Inflammatory bowel disease is thought to develop when abnormalities of the immune system combine with abnormalities of the intestinal environment. The lab therefore analyzes the immune system, intestinal environmental factors, and the function of the epithelial layer that separates the two. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name "Immunoregulation."

The Experimental Immunology Lab studies, with a focus on regulatory T cells, how the immune system avoids reacting to the body's own tissues. When this mechanism breaks down, autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis occur. The lab discovered naturally occurring regulatory T cells, which suppress the activity of self-reactive lymphocytes, and has shown experimentally that abnormalities in these cells can cause autoimmune disease. Using SKG mice, which spontaneously develop a disease very similar to rheumatoid arthritis, the lab aims to clarify the process by which genetic abnormalities lead to autoimmune disease.

The Malaria Immunology lab studies the immune response to infection with malaria parasites. Malaria parasites infect both mammals and Anopheles mosquitoes, and have evolved a variety of strategies to evade the host immune system. Using mouse models of malaria and genetically modified mice lacking various genes, the lab applies imaging and immunological methods to investigate parasite-host interactions and disease pathology. The lab was established in 2010 at the Immunology Frontier Research Center (IFReC) at Osaka University, and in 2019 it moved its base to the Institute of Medical Science, the University of Tokyo, where it continues its research and education.

The Immunoparasitology lab studies the mechanisms of the battle between pathogenic protozoan parasites or cancer and the immune system that protects the body. The lab places importance on investigating how infection is established and how immunity works, from the perspectives of both the parasite and the host. Based on the idea that immunity against protozoan parasites and immunity against cancer are strikingly similar, the lab works on both infection immunity and cancer immunity. On the lab's website, it is introduced as the "Yamamoto Lab" of the Division of Infection Pathogenesis at the Research Institute for Microbial Diseases.

The Biochemistry and Immunology lab studies a form of cell death called apoptosis and the mechanisms by which dead cells are cleared by phagocytes. Cells that have undergone apoptosis are taken up by phagocytes with their contents intact and then cleared, which is why apoptosis is also called "clean cell death." The lab has investigated the proteins and enzymes involved in clearing dead cells, using knockout mice as well. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name "Shigekazu Nagata Lab."

The Molecular Neuroscience Lab conducts basic and translational research to overcome the lasting impairments that follow damage to the central nervous system, including the brain and spinal cord. In the brain and spinal cord, neurons function by forming networks with one another, and once these networks are damaged, recovery is extremely rare. The lab believes that if lost networks can be repaired, central nervous system disorders can be treated, and it aims to establish new nerve regeneration therapies. In addition, it seeks to take an integrated approach to the question of dynamics in the repair process of neural circuits. Note that the lab's approach described here is based on the professor's greeting page (written around 2018).

The Yamasaki Lab, in the Division of Molecular Immunology at the Research Institute for Microbial Diseases, studies immune receptors, the part of the body's protective immune system that quickly detects the invasion of foreign invaders and abnormalities in the body. The lab has discovered members of the lectin receptor family that recognize pathogens and damaged self components, and it aims to apply this to methods for efficiently enhancing immunity and to treatments for diseases caused by excessive immune reactions. The lab also investigates the selection mechanisms that operate as T cells develop in the thymus, and the T cell response to SARS-CoV-2. Graduate students are accepted from the Graduate School of Medicine and the Graduate School of Frontier Biosciences.
