The Porous Materials Chemistry Lab studies the fabrication of porous ceramic materials and the control of their fine structure, contributing to the fields of separation, adsorption, catalysis, and energy. Even among porous materials, the size and shape of the pores and the proportion of empty space vary widely. The lab engineers pore characteristics to suit the intended application and works on developing new materials with excellent functions. It also evaluates the basic physical properties of the materials it makes and works to connect them to applied research.

Ichiro Naruse, Professor

The Naruse Lab studies technologies for efficiently extracting energy from solid fuels such as waste and biomass while taking the environment into account. Through experiments and analysis, it investigates how ash and environmentally harmful substances are formed when solid fuels are burned, converted into gas, or used in ironmaking. The lab operates as the Environmental and Energy Engineering research group in the Department of Mechanical Systems Engineering.

Toshiyuki Yamamoto, Professor
0 student voices
The Yamamoto Lab studies the movement of people and vehicles in the field of transportation planning. The research projects page lists, as completed projects, a shared autonomous vehicle system, risk management of transportation networks, and simulations that evaluate urban activities and travel. The publication list on the lab website covers papers up to around 2021, and the titles include public transportation use, driving behavior, traffic accidents, and the power consumption of electric vehicles. The lab belongs to the Institute of Materials and Systems for Sustainability at Nagoya University, and the professor also holds a concurrent position at the Institute of Mobility Society in the Institutes of Innovation for Future Society.

The Water Environment Microbial Ecology Engineering Lab studies environmental remediation using microorganisms that live in aquatic environments. While viewing problems on a global scale, the lab makes a point of working on solutions to concrete technical challenges in its research themes. In particular, it aims to establish environmental remediation technologies that use microorganisms that grow in oxygen-free environments. The two pillars of its research are wastewater treatment using microbial fuel cells and groundwater remediation by microorganisms that respire organohalides.

Yoshihiro Kojima, Associate Professor

Eco-Energy Engineering (Kojima Research Group) studies material conversion that uses the chemical and physical effects produced when ultrasound is applied to liquids at ambient temperature and pressure. The lab also uses the mist generated by ultrasound as a reaction medium, working on the synthesis of temperature-responsive polymers and fine metal particles. In its research on catalysts made with ultrasound, the lab studied how to enhance the activity of photocatalysts that work under visible light, aiming at applications in environmental remediation. The lab belongs to the Systems Creation Division of the Institute of Materials and Systems for Sustainability, and is introduced under the name "Kojima Lab" in the institute's introductory materials.
