The Clinical Research Promotion Group has the mission of promoting the development of new medical technologies. It promotes the practical application of innovative medical seeds created through collaborative research, and supports clinical trials from planning through to publication of papers while complying with regulatory requirements. Besides this support work, members also pursue their own research themes, including arrhythmia, cardiac regenerative medicine, Nrf2, ischemia, and obesity in the cardiovascular system, and drug therapy for gastrointestinal cancer. Member Takeshi Machino is also involved in medical entrepreneurship education (Research Studio) and the Tsukuba Cross-disciplinary Medical Seminar.

The lab is an endowed chair funded by JA Ibaraki Kouseiren (the Ibaraki Prefectural Federation of Agricultural Cooperatives for Health and Welfare), and aims to contribute to regional healthcare through innovation from academia. In addition to community-rooted networks, the lab builds networks that cross disciplines and national borders, and also supports researchers. The lab works with diverse partners inside and outside the university to advance cross-disciplinary research and development. It actively uses startups and venture companies to accelerate the social implementation of mature innovations.

The lab conducts research and development aimed at realizing next-generation cancer immunotherapy that uses immune cells. It belongs to the Drug Discovery Support Research Division of the Transborder Medical Research Center. The lab studies immunotherapy using gene-modified immune cells, such as CAR-T cell therapy and TCR-T cell therapy, as well as immunotherapy using iPS cells. In addition to basic research, such as searching for new cancer treatment targets and analyzing how immune cells attack tumors, the lab also works on research into cell manufacturing aimed at clinical practice.

The Hospital Clinical Research Group (Pathology Division) performs morphological diagnosis of all cells, tissues, and organs submitted from outpatient clinics, inpatient wards, and operating rooms at University of Tsukuba Hospital. Pathologists and cytopathologists diagnose tiny tissue fragments obtained by endoscopy and liquid specimens such as pleural effusion, ascites, and sputum, and communicate the results to clinicians. Together with the Diagnostic Radiology Division, the Pathology Division plays a role in keeping the hospital's diagnostic accuracy at a high level. The Pathology Division's page introduces the Tsukuba Human Tissue Diagnosis Center for diagnostic services provided outside the hospital, and the Basic Research Support Division of the Tsukuba Human Tissue Biobank Center for research support.

The Hospital Clinical Research Group (General Internal Medicine) is a clinical department that is not limited to any particular organ and responds broadly to the health problems patients have. From the specialized perspective of general medicine, it diagnoses and manages patients with common symptoms such as headache and fever, as well as patients with multiple health problems. In addition to care from an angle different from organ-based specialties, such as the smoking cessation clinic and the Kampo clinic, it provides support through counseling and medication prescriptions at the smoking cessation clinic and the alcohol reduction clinic as preventive medicine efforts. The University of Tsukuba Hospital website introduces it under the name "Department of General Medicine."

The Health Services Research Lab comprehensively and scientifically evaluates and analyzes the quality of medical services (including nursing, health, and welfare) using health services research methods. Through interdisciplinary research results based on empirical data, the lab aims to contribute to realizing health care that is in harmony with daily life. The lab examines issues not only from a medical perspective but also from the perspectives of policy studies, law, economics, sociology, and anthropology, and shares its results in Japan and abroad. Because Prof. Tamiya retired at the end of FY2025, graduate students entering from FY2026 who focus mainly on health services research will be accepted by Associate Professor Watanabe, Project Professor Sugiyama, and others, and supported by a team that includes assistant professors.
