Hiromi Yanagisawa, Professor
0 student voices
The Yanagisawa Lab studies how cells respond to changes in their surrounding environment, the extracellular environment. The cells that make up the human body change their cytoskeleton and functions in response to changes in the extracellular environment, and in this way maintain the condition of the body. The lab focuses on vascular cells (endothelial cells, smooth muscle cells, and fibroblasts) and tissue stem cells, and investigates how cells respond to environments altered by aging and disease. The lab also continues research on the extracellular matrix, the main component of the extracellular environment, and works with researchers in imaging, bioengineering, and glycoengineering to develop new tools for diagnosis and treatment. On the lab's website, it is introduced as the "TARA Center Circulation Project, Hiromi Yanagisawa Lab."
Kenji Iwasaki, Professor
0 student voices
The Iwasaki Lab conducts research aimed at clarifying the mysteries of life and the causes of disease from the structures of molecules. For structural analysis, the lab uses cryo-electron microscopy with single-particle analysis, as well as X-ray crystallography. Targeting viruses, bacteria, and soft tissue tumors, the lab aims to contribute to drug discovery through a method called structure-based drug design (SBDD). The key to successful structural analysis is how well the target molecule is prepared, and the lab draws on all of its knowledge of biochemistry and cell biology.
Nen Saito, Associate Professor

The Mathematical Life Dynamics Research Project (Saito Project) studies living systems mathematically, drawing on biophysics, mathematical biology, and nonequilibrium and nonlinear physics. Targeting the movement of cells and tissues, collective phenomena in molecular assemblies, and evolutionary dynamics, the lab describes phenomena mathematically to explain their mechanisms and compares the models with experimental data. Even simple simulations can give rise to new phenomena when run at large scale, and the lab also searches the life sciences for real counterparts to the phenomena it finds.
Satoshi Ohno, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Life Systems Science Lab (Ohno Lab) aims to create new mathematical frameworks for understanding the essence of living systems from large-scale biological data. By combining the strong descriptive power of artificial intelligence (AI) with the logical rigor of systems biology, the lab is developing broadly applicable analysis technologies. The lab works on projects such as single-cell metabolic modeling, integrated multi-omics analysis, understanding of disease states, and diagnostic and predictive AI using medical data. The Ohno Lab is a new lab launched in January 2026, and it is recruiting undergraduate and graduate students from diverse backgrounds, including biology, medicine, information science, and the mathematical and physical sciences.
