The Radiation Oncology Lab works on clinical care and research in radiation therapy for cancer at the Proton Therapy Center, which is part of the university hospital. The University of Tsukuba began full-scale research on proton therapy in 1983, giving it the longest history of any institution in Japan. Proton therapy can focus radiation precisely on the cancer lesion, so it has little effect on the surrounding normal cells and is characterized by milder side effects. In addition, the Proton Medical Research Center makes research and development of boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT), a new cancer treatment, its other main pillar.

The Radiation Health Risk Science group runs the Radiation Health Risk Science Education Program (RaMSEP) at the Institute of Medicine, University of Tsukuba. The program aims to train people who can respond to all phases of a radiation disaster, from immediately after it occurs through recovery and preparation for the next disaster. It has three pillars: undergraduate (college) education, graduate education, and postgraduate lifelong education (a certificate program). In the graduate school, a research field called "Radiation Health Risk Science" has been established, where doctoral students receive research supervision.

The Anesthesiology Lab studies a wide range of conditions related to anesthesiology, including perioperative and intensive care medicine and pathological pain. Using experimental animal models, the lab visualizes the breakdown of cellular-level homeostasis in major organs such as the central nervous system, cardiovascular system, and respiratory system, with the aim of clarifying the mechanisms of disease. Using perioperative databases, the lab identifies problems and risk factors in current standard care, with the aim of developing new evidence-based strategies for perioperative management.

The Clinical Laboratory Medicine Lab conducts research in laboratory medicine, including genetic and biochemical methods for diagnosing pheochromocytoma. In sports medicine, its research keywords include anti-doping, exercise therapy for lifestyle-related diseases, and analysis of changes in stress markers. The lab's head, Prof. Takekoshi, is a physician certified as both a clinical laboratory specialist and a clinical genetics specialist. The lab's website introduces it as the Clinical Laboratory Medicine / Sports Medicine lab in the Institute of Medicine at the University of Tsukuba.

The Sports Medical Science Lab specializes in sports medicine (anti-doping) and endocrinology, and studies topics such as developing new anti-doping technologies and the genetic diagnosis of pheochromocytoma. Many substances used for doping are hormones, so the lab treats anti-doping as a branch of endocrinology. From the standpoint of a clinical genetics specialist, the lab also pursues research on using individual genetic differences to tailor exercise prescriptions to each person. The information on the lab's website dates from around 2016.

The Clinical Pharmacy Lab analyzes genetic polymorphisms in drug-metabolizing enzymes and transporter proteins, and studies drug-drug interactions. Focusing on immunosuppressants for kidney transplant patients, antiarrhythmic drugs, and tyrosine kinase inhibitors, the lab examines how genetic differences and drug combinations affect treatment. The lab also analyzes side effects and interactions of Kampo (traditional Japanese herbal) medicines and works on predicting blood drug concentrations.

The Emergency and Critical Care Medicine Lab serves as the Department of Emergency and Intensive Care at University of Tsukuba Hospital, providing emergency medicine and intensive care. The lab accepts a wide range of emergency patients, from children to older adults, and from illnesses of internal causes to those of external causes such as poisoning, burns, and trauma. Its research covers the characteristics of people for whom an emergency call is made because of cardiopulmonary arrest, and systems that relay information on patients being taken by ambulance to the hospital.

With the keyword "contributing to community healthcare through education," the Community Medicine Education Lab carries out activities such as education in community healthcare settings and clinical practice in areas with physician shortages. The lab hopes to play a central role in linking the university with local communities and creating an environment in which healthcare professionals who work in a community are trained by that community. The lab also actively pursues research on themes such as clinical research in community healthcare settings, revitalization of community healthcare, and clinical medical education, and intends to share its results nationwide.

Medical Oncology is a clinical department at University of Tsukuba Hospital that provides internal medicine care centered on the diagnosis of patients with solid tumors and outpatient chemotherapy. Working with organ-specific clinical departments, it also accepts patients who are suspected of having cancer but have no diagnosis, as well as patients whose primary tumor is unknown. It also works on cancer genomic medicine. Together with the Department of Respiratory Medicine, it belongs to the North East Japan Study Group and takes part in clinical trials for lung cancer. The lab says that Ibaraki Prefecture has few physicians who specialize in cancer drug therapy, and that it wants to put effort into educating medical students and young doctors as well.

The faculty members of Translational and Clinical Research are introduced as staff of the Tsukuba Clinical Research & Development Organization (T-CReDO) at the University of Tsukuba. T-CReDO is an organization that provides one-stop support from seed development to clinical trials. For researchers, it provides information on open calls for translational research, consultations on seeds, consultations on clinical research, and educational training.
