The Clinical Trials and Clinical Epidemiology Lab studies the development of theories and methods for clinical trials and clinical epidemiology, as well as their application. Through clinical research in a variety of disease areas, the lab aims to present evidence for disease control. The lab's page introduces an epidemiology group and a biostatistics group. The lab states that patient care in everyday clinical practice has always relied on the results of some form of medical research.

The Social Mental Health Lab studies mental health problems that are becoming more serious against the backdrop of social change, such as social withdrawal (hikikomori), child abuse, alcohol and drug dependence, and crime. People with a wide range of specialties and backgrounds gather here, including medicine, psychology, nursing, health sciences, and social welfare. The lab's fieldwork is not limited to medical institutions. It includes forensic psychiatric evaluation, judicial and correctional institutions, welfare facilities, self-help groups, schools, and workplaces. Participant observation, in which analysis is carried out while providing treatment and counseling services, is the foundation of the lab's research.

The International Social Medicine Lab conducts action-oriented, problem-solving research aimed at solving global health problems. The lab works collaboratively with people from various fields, beyond the boundaries of labs and universities. Students may come from any undergraduate major. They take up research after acquiring the basic knowledge of epidemiology and statistics needed for social medicine research. The lab's website has pages on discussions of traffic accident countermeasures and measures for elderly drivers, and on a project to improve living environments to protect children in Mongolia from burn injuries.

The Health Policy and Health Economics research group studies problems in health care administration and systems, as well as the quality of health care services. It conducts evaluation and analysis using approaches from health care management, health economics, environmental health, environmental epidemiology, and global health. Based on the results, the group aims to build more effective policies. The group belongs to the Department of Frontier Medical Sciences. In collaboration with the Environmental Health research group in Health and Sport Sciences, it also operates as the health policy field of the Department of Human Care Science.

The Life Course Epidemiology Lab aims to generate evidence using epidemiological methods and contribute to solving public health problems. In addition to pharmacoepidemiology and clinical epidemiology using medical data such as claims (receipts), the lab works on the use of children's health checkup data and participates in the Japan Environment and Children's Study (JECS). The lab is open to a wide range of applicants: students and health care professionals who want to learn epidemiology and statistical analysis in practice, and working adults who want to study public health. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name "Yoshida Lab."

Associate Professor Atsushi Miyawaki, head of the Public Health Policy field in the Institute of Medicine at the University of Tsukuba, studies the social structures and systems that affect health and the quality of, and access to, health care. The behavior and preferences of health care actors are also subjects of his research. After initial clinical training as a physician, Associate Professor Miyawaki majored in health policy and applied statistics in graduate school. The lab conducts research using public statistics from Japan and the US, claims (receipt) data, electronic medical record data, and more.

The Digital Health Lab analyzes a wide range of digitized health information, aiming to solve problems in medicine and health care. The data it works with include electronic medical records, insurance claims (receipts), information from mobile apps and biosensors, images and audio, and genomic and omics data. In addition to conventional epidemiological and statistical methods, the lab uses AI analysis techniques such as machine learning. The lab welcomes students who have mastered the basics of epidemiology and biostatistics and want to take on the analysis of new types of medical big data, as well as the development and implementation of new tools.

The Biostatistics Lab conducts research to answer statistical problems that arise in medicine, biology, pharmacy, and health science research. Statistics is not just about data analysis; it is needed at every stage of research, from planning to reporting. The lab develops new statistical methods, studies how methods perform and when to use which, and conducts applied research that uses statistical methods in medical and biological studies. Faculty members of the lab also work as trial statisticians at the Tsukuba Clinical Research and Development Organization at the University of Tsukuba, where they are involved in trial design, statistical analysis, and statistical consulting.

The Cancer Nursing and Care Systems Research Group studies support that enables people diagnosed with and treated for cancer to actively manage their own health even after treatment. The support incorporates information and communication technology (ICT), and its effects are verified in terms of quality of life (QOL). The starting point was a study by the group's leader on what health means to people who have experienced cancer, which showed that the recognition that "in the end, it's up to me" holds the key to health. In the care systems area, the group studies policies and care systems that can improve conditions in clinical settings, with community healthcare, home-visit nursing, elderly care, and big data as keywords.

The International Developmental Care Lab conducts research that studies empowerment scientifically. Empowerment means giving people dreams and hope, encouraging them, and bringing forth the wonderful strength to live that people inherently have. The lab applies empowerment techniques to the field of care to achieve better care, and it advocates "empowerment care science." Using long-term cohort studies and the group interview method, which draws on the voices of the people concerned, the lab conducts research together with researchers, practitioners, and the people concerned in many countries.
