The Cognitive Systems Design Lab studies human-machine systems in which humans and machines work together. Based on the characteristics of human cognition, judgment, and action, the lab investigates mechanisms by which humans and computers cooperate according to the situation, and the human interfaces needed for them. The lab studies interaction and collaboration between humans and automated systems in automobiles, ships, aviation, railways, drones, and more. It focuses especially on automobiles and has also carried out joint research with automobile manufacturers.

The Cryptography, Puzzles, and Games Lab mainly studies card-based cryptography, which realizes cryptographic techniques using playing cards and similar cards. The lab collaborates with the Cryptography Theory Lab (Kunihiro Lab) at the University of Tsukuba. Its research themes are wide-ranging, from connections to mathematics such as finite group theory and combinatorics, to applications in education, to combinations with games and puzzles. The lab is recruiting students who are interested in any of cryptography, puzzles, games, or mathematics.

The Behavioral Economics and Collective Behavior Lab studies how individuals and groups can make good judgments and decisions. The central question is how to use information about oneself, others, and the group in order to judge better. In addition to collective intelligence and behavioral economics, the lab works on online reviews, recommendation, and decision support in the age of AI. The undergraduate practicum emphasizes ideas, so students can take part even without sufficient knowledge of computer simulation or statistics.

The Knowledge Acquisition System Lab (KASYS) studies information retrieval. Within information retrieval, its main subjects are retrieval models and ranking, learning to rank, analysis of search user behavior, and recommender systems. Much of its research uses large language models and machine learning to build high-performing algorithms. As of 2026, the lab is based at the University of Tsukuba and the National Institute of Informatics.

The Human-Information-Technology Lab (HIT Lab) studies interaction among people, information, and technology. The lab regards technology not as a mere tool but as a medium that connects people with one another and with information. Based on an understanding of each individual's behavior, cognition, and emotions, it designs interactions that support connection, learning, and participation, aiming to support people's agency and growth. Its research combines experiments, behavioral observation in the laboratory and in real-world settings, and statistical and computational analysis.

With the major goal of guaranteeing software correctness, the Program Logic Lab studies logic-based foundational theory of software. The lab applies this theory to research on software verification, synthesis, and transformation. Its research is built on three pillars: the theory of programming languages based on lambda calculus and type theory, program transformation, and verification through model checking and theorem proving. The lab is led by Professor Yukiyoshi Kameyama. Undergraduate students from the College of Information Science and graduate students from the Degree Programs in Computer Science belong to it.

The Knowledge and Data Engineering Lab studies data engineering for making use of big data, along with the foundational technologies of related fields. Centered on databases and data mining, the lab also draws on the latest results in machine learning and AI. At the Center for Computational Sciences, the Center for Artificial Intelligence Research, and the International Institute for Integrative Sleep Medicine, the lab also conducts research and development in collaboration with the fields of science and medicine.

The Machine Learning and Data Mining Lab aims to improve the reliability of machine learning and data mining through algorithm development and theoretical analysis based on mathematical statistics. In particular, the lab tackles problems caused by "data bias," where the data used for learning becomes skewed unintentionally. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name "MDL Lab."

The Interactive Programming Lab (IPLAB) conducts research on human interfaces and software. Its distinguishing feature is that it goes beyond logical consideration and puts into practice the creation of software by actually writing programs. In particular, the lab has produced a variety of research results on GUIs (graphical user interfaces) and visual programming. It promotes exchange with researchers outside the university and private-sector manufacturers, and encourages presenting papers at academic conferences, including international conferences.

The Black-Box Optimization Lab mainly studies the design and analysis of black-box optimization techniques such as evolutionary computation. Applications to engineering design and optimal control, reinforcement learning, and automated machine learning are also among its research subjects. The lab is also interested in the design principles and theoretical analysis of evolutionary computation, trustworthy AI technologies based on robust optimization and reinforcement learning, and the use of generative models. It is a lab of the College of Information Science at the University of Tsukuba and of the Computer Science Program in the graduate school.
