The Environmental Semiconductors and Magnetic Materials Lab aims to create devices with new functions from semiconductors and magnetic materials made of abundant elements. For semiconductors, the lab works with BaSi2 and Group 14 semiconductors made of carbon, silicon, germanium, and tin; for magnetic materials, it works with Fe4N, Co4N, and Mn4N. Its research covers a wide range, from crystal growth (making the materials) and property evaluation to device design, fabrication, and evaluation, as well as first-principles calculations. The lab is distinctive for its well-equipped facilities for making semiconductor thin films and for handling both semiconductors and magnetic materials in the same lab.

The Theoretical Materials Science Lab studies first-principles calculations, which determine the structure and electronic states of materials using only fundamental physical constants. In particular, the lab works on developing calculation methods that incorporate relativistic effects, which are needed to calculate materials containing heavy elements. The research topics also include the structure and electronic states of ferromagnetic thin films and actinide compounds. The lab's website distributes RF-1.5, a first-principles calculation program.

The Quantum Properties and Molecular Theory Lab is a theoretical lab whose research keywords are cuprate superconductors and quantum computers. Using quantum mechanical theory, the lab investigates the currents that flow in superconductors, the phase transition between the superconducting and normal states, and related phenomena. The lab also studies whether the spin-vortex-induced loop current that appears in thin films of cuprates can be used as a qubit. The lab's website goes by the name "KOIZUMI LAB," and the site shows the Center for Computational Sciences.

The Chemical Life Lab (Yamagishi Lab) combines organic chemistry with photophysics and molecular biology to study materials that lie between life and matter. The lab aims to create the simple molecules that were used when life began. It also studies molecular machines that measure health conditions inside the body, and soft laser devices that move like living organisms.

The Nanomaterials Chemistry Lab (Kondo-Oki Lab) studies new substances and materials to solve problems of resources, energy, and the environment. A carbon-neutral society requires renewable energy and the use of hydrogen obtained by electrolyzing water, and new materials such as high-performance catalysts are important. The lab focuses on hydrogen boride sheets, made of boron and hydrogen, and boron sulfide sheets, made of boron and sulfur, both of which the lab was the first in the world to create.

The Visual Media Lab works on 3D displays and machine learning under the theme of media engineering. The 3D display group studies high-definition glasses-free 3D display and natural 3D display, aimed at applications that require accurate perception of 3D position, such as surgical simulation and robot teleoperation. The machine learning group works on automatic segmentation of CT images using deep learning, and on classifying, organizing, and visualizing documents about political and social issues.

The Digital Control Lab studies general-purpose control methods that can be used across a wide range of fields, not limited to specific devices. It takes on the question "What information should an essentially appropriate control input contain?", devising new theories and methods and verifying them through experiments. Two faculty members each lead their own lab (group), and they cooperate closely in lab seminars and in supervising students' research.

The Image Information Lab conducts research centered on image information and computational media. Its work builds on foundational technologies such as computer vision, augmented reality, mixed reality, free-viewpoint video, and video recognition and understanding. Students are supervised by multiple faculty members, which helps them develop the ability to think about their research from a variety of perspectives. The lab operates across several organizations, including the College of Engineering Systems, graduate degree programs, and the Center for Computational Sciences.

The Neuroinformatics Lab studies how the brain works by analyzing recorded data on the activity of the brain and neurons. The lab aims to offer artificial intelligence and robotics a new perspective, drawn from the internal mechanisms of the brain that emerge from neuroscience data analysis. The lab is also building an experimental environment that analyzes the EEG of sleeping mice in real time and uses optogenetics to control the activity of specific neurons. This experimental system is being built in collaboration with the Sakaguchi Lab at the International Institute for Integrative Sleep Medicine, University of Tsukuba.

The Virtual Reality Lab studies devices that create the sensations of touching objects and walking around in a virtual space. It develops devices that return force to the hand, devices that give the sensation of walking on one's own feet, spherical displays, and more, and is also advancing their application to rehabilitation.
