The Bioresource Management Lab studies how to accurately identify molds and yeasts while managing strains of pathogenic fungi. As part of strain management, the lab observes the morphology of pathogenic fungi, performs phylogenetic analysis, and examines differences within the same species. It works on methods to rapidly identify species, both from cultured fungi and from uncultured samples.

The Environmental Health Lab studies how living environments and environmental chemicals affect human health. Focusing especially on children, who are more susceptible to environmental effects, the lab conducts cohort studies that follow the health of parents and children over the long term, starting during pregnancy. Based on the DOHaD theory, which holds that the environment during the fetal period and soon after birth affects disease in adulthood, the lab considers environment and health across the whole life course.

The Nutrition and Metabolic Medicine Lab studies how diet affects human health, with nutrition and metabolism as keywords. Using birth cohort studies that begin with mothers during pregnancy, the lab examines the relationship among nutrition, the gut environment, and health from the fetal period. In collaboration with Chiba University Hospital, it also conducts research in clinical nutrition, which supports treatment from the nutritional side.

The Healthy City and Spatial Design Lab studies how spaces such as cities and buildings relate to people's health, behavior, and well-being. Rather than attributing health problems solely to individual lifestyle habits, the lab looks at them from the side of the environment, including housing, urban structure, and connections with society. The lab moves back and forth between two kinds of work: research that uses epidemiological methods to clarify the relationship between environment and health, and design that applies those findings to the planning, implementation, and evaluation of real spaces.

The Social Preventive Medicine Lab studies how the structures of society, such as income and community ties, affect people's health. The lab investigates the social determinants of health and health disparities using large-scale data, including the Japan Gerontological Evaluation Study (JAGES), in which municipalities across Japan participate. The lab also works on social implementation, applying the evidence from its research to municipal policy and corporate health programs. The lab holds lab research meetings and graduate lab seminars on a regular basis, and people visiting the lab can attend if they sign up in advance.

The Disease Preventive Medicine Lab studies obesity and its complications from two sides: causes inside the body, and social causes and problems. It is a new lab established in January 2025. Obesity is often thought to result from overeating and lack of exercise, but constitution and the environment from early childhood are also thought to influence a person's tendency to gain weight and their appetite. The lab seeks to do away with the idea that reaching a standard body weight is what makes a person healthy, and explores realistic weight-loss approaches for treating complications.

The lab examines systems for the treatment of mentally disordered offenders in Japan and abroad, and makes recommendations on how those systems should work and how they can be improved. It regularly holds study meetings that bring together people from the many institutions involved in treatment, including courts, correctional facilities, and psychiatric medical institutions. In recent years, the lab has focused on joint research with correctional facilities, studying offending behavior and mental health, and offering new treatment and education programs and new perspectives for assessment. From an international perspective, it also studies involuntary admission in psychiatry, the protection of the human rights of people with mental disorders, and the assessment of decision-making capacity under the adult guardianship system.

The lab studies the pathology and treatment of psychiatric disorders, focusing on schizophrenia and eating disorders. Its main themes are understanding pathology, pursuing treatments, and supporting social reintegration. Beyond basic research and studies of genes and brain imaging, the lab also pays attention to the individuality of each patient and to their psychological problems. It works with institutions such as the Department of Psychiatry at Chiba University and carries out many joint studies.

Higuchi Lab specializes in hydrology and satellite climatology, and studies the role of water in the Earth's environment. It analyzes data from a variety of Earth observation satellites in combination, aiming to understand how the climate works, including the effects of human activity. Because some phenomena cannot be captured by satellites alone, the lab sometimes makes observations in the field and works with researchers in numerical simulation. Because long data records are essential for detecting climate change, the lab also puts effort into archiving and releasing data from geostationary meteorological satellites.

Koji Kajiwara, Lecturer

The lab of Lecturer Kajiwara studies how to estimate vegetation biophysical variables over wide areas using observation data from optical sensors on satellites. For plants with large 3D structures, such as forests, the intensity of the observed reflected light changes in complex ways depending on the angles of the sun and the satellite and on the three-dimensional structure of the forest. The lab's research therefore centers on modeling the relationship between the 3D structure of trees and their reflectance characteristics, and linking that relationship to vegetation biophysical variables. The lab also uses laser scanning instruments to measure the three-dimensional structure of actual forests.
