Associate Professor Masataka Ishimura of the Perinatal and Pediatric Medicine Pediatrics Lab is engaged in clinical care, education, and research in pediatrics. The profile introduces the specialty as the field of childhood blood and immune disorders. In research, the lab conducts basic and clinical research centered on hereditary blood disorders and coagulation disorders, immunodeficiency, and pediatric connective tissue diseases. In education, the lab gives lectures and bedside training to medical students, supervises junior residents and pediatric residents, and provides research guidance to graduate students.

In the Artificial Joint Biomaterials Lab, Associate Professor Satoshi Hamai studies joint movement and the course after surgery, focusing on artificial hip and knee joints. In research, the lab works on the biomechanics of the hip and knee joints. The lab examines the timing of surgery, guidelines for rehabilitation, activity levels after surgery, and patients' own assessments. In the field of orthopedic surgery, Associate Professor Satoshi Hamai also performs computer-assisted and robot-assisted surgery.

The lab studies knee joint surgery and the development of treatments for osteoarthritis. Among knee surgeries, its research topics are UKA and interlocking OW-DTO. It also works on developing a treatment for osteoarthritis using amlexanox, an inhibitor of the factors GRK5 and IKKε. Drug therapy for rheumatoid arthritis is also one of its research subjects.

The lab studies radiotherapy for malignant tumors such as cancer. It conducts research on stereotactic body radiotherapy and on radiotherapy strategies for brain metastases, and examines the usefulness of online adaptive radiotherapy for malignant tumors. It also works on AI-based segmentation of pelvic lymph node regions and on photoimmunotherapy. The lab is an endowed department in the Clinical Radiology field at the Faculty of Medical Sciences.

The lab studies eye diseases from the perspectives of immunology, imaging, and genomics. For inflammatory eye diseases, alongside clinical care, it investigates why the diseases become prolonged and the diversity of NK cells. It also works on deep learning using ophthalmic clinical images and on genomic analysis of cancers in the field of ophthalmology. Genomic analysis of multifactorial diseases is another of its research themes.

The Visual Function Regeneration Lab is an endowed lab within the Department of Ophthalmology, Graduate School of Medicine. It studies autoimmune uveitis, a chronic, non-infectious inflammation inside the eye. The retina contains retinal ganglion cells, which transmit visual information to the brain, so inflammation there can lead to blindness. Autoimmune uveitis is among the leading causes of blindness in the United States and Asia, yet no fundamental cure exists. The lab aims to develop new treatments to save patients who lose their vision to this disease.

The Aging Pathology Repair Lab aims to clarify the mechanisms of the various diseases that arise with aging and to contribute to healthy aging. The lab focuses on the biological roles of plasmalogens, a special class of phospholipids. Plasmalogens are known to decrease with age, but until now their physiological functions had been largely unclear. In addition, the lab conducts research based on the concept of "brain fatigue" and research on the relationship between the brain and the gut.

The Severe Cardiopulmonary Failure Lab studies patients with severe heart failure who need a heart transplant, as well as patients who have received one. Among patients with severe heart failure awaiting a heart transplant, the lab studied anemia, an important comorbidity of heart failure. After a heart transplant, patients must continue immunosuppressive therapy for life to prevent rejection, and the lab is searching for biomarkers that can serve as indicators for this therapy. The lab is an endowed lab within the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery, Graduate School of Medicine.

Building on the aortic surgery developed in the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at Kyushu University Hospital, the Advanced Aortic Treatment Lab was established in 2020 to improve treatment outcomes and develop new techniques. The aorta is the main pathway that carries blood from the heart to the whole body, and the lab treats conditions such as aortic aneurysms, in which part of the aortic wall becomes weak and dilated. Treatment relies on two approaches: prosthetic graft replacement, which replaces the diseased section, and stent graft surgery, which covers the aneurysm from the inside. The lab has refined both without favoring either. The lab can also perform hybrid surgery, which combines the advantages of both.
