The lab studies medical education systems, clinical skills education, educational program evaluation, clinical supervisors, e-learning, and related topics. In the field of medical education, attention is growing around the concept of BEME (Best Evidence Medical Education), which applies Evidence Based Medicine (EBM) to the context of medical education. Prof. Niiro supervises the clinical clerkships and research of medical students, residents, specialty trainees, and graduate students. The lab is located within the Integrated Medical Education Center on the hospital campus.

The lab studies how neurons and glial cells, which make up the brain and nervous system, are produced from common neural stem cells. The differentiation of neural stem cells is controlled not only by extracellular factors but also by intracellular mechanisms known as epigenetics, including DNA methylation. The lab aims to uncover how this differentiation is controlled and to apply the resulting findings to the repair and regeneration of damaged nerve function. Lab visits and tours are accepted at any time.

The lab studies how the self-renewal and differentiation of hematopoietic stem cells, the source of blood cells, are controlled. Stem cell function is thought to be regulated through the relationship with the surrounding microenvironment known as the niche, and the lab investigates the cells and molecules that form the niche in the bone marrow. The lab also works as a cancer stem cell medicine field, conducting research on treating blood cancers by targeting leukemia stem cells and the niche that supports them.

The Longevity Stem Cell Medicine Lab studies cancer resistance, aging resistance, longevity, and sociality in long-lived mammals, focusing mainly on naked mole-rats and Damaraland mole-rats. Unlike humans and mice, naked mole-rats age slowly and rarely develop age-related diseases such as cancer, Alzheimer's disease, and heart disease, which is an exceptional trait. The lab aims to establish a field called "healthy longevity and evolutionary medicine" that spans medicine, science, veterinary medicine, pharmacy, and reproductive biology. The lab's website refers to it by the name "Deba-ken."

The Cancer Stem Cell Medicine Lab studies hematopoietic stem cells, which give rise to blood, and the bone marrow environment (niche) that supports them. It focuses on mesenchymal stem cells that support hematopoietic stem cells in the bone marrow, and on shelterin, a group of proteins involved in stem cell aging. The lab also investigates how hematologic malignancies such as leukemia and multiple myeloma interact with the bone marrow environment.

The Integrative Tissue Repair Medicine Lab studies how cells of the nervous system differentiate and applies the findings to regenerative medicine. It investigates, from an epigenetic perspective, the mechanisms by which neural stem cells become neurons and glial cells. As ways to replace neurons lost to spinal cord injury or cerebral infarction, the lab is advancing research on neural stem cell transplantation and direct reprogramming. It also works to elucidate the mechanisms underlying the onset of autism spectrum disorder.

The Community Medicine Education Unit works on education that allows Kyushu University medical students to learn community medicine, and on research with community medicine as its field. Established in May 2012, the lab works with off-campus training facilities. It aims to help as many medical students as possible grow into physicians with the motivation and sense of mission to serve community healthcare. As the population ages, holistic care is needed that looks not only at disease but also at the body, mind, and lifestyle. For this reason, the lab places importance on training in community settings. At Kyushu University, in addition to the required community medicine practicum in the 5th and 6th years, the lab also offers an optional Clinical Clerkship community medicine practicum for those who wish to take it.

The lab works on treatment selection for patients with kidney failure, peritoneal dialysis care, and clinical and basic research on it. It provides treatment counseling so that patients can choose an appropriate kidney replacement therapy from among hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, and kidney transplantation. It also works to provide high-quality peritoneal dialysis care through multidisciplinary team care. It holds seminars related to kidney failure care and also trains medical staff.

The lab works on research and development of imaging technologies such as CT, MRI, and PET, and of contrast agents and how to use them. It was established in April 2010 as an endowed department funded by donations. Molecular imaging is a technology that turns life phenomena inside the body into images and analyzes them at the molecular and cellular level, without burdening patients. Currently, using equipment such as a 256-slice multidetector CT and a 3-tesla high-field MRI, the lab mainly studies cardiovascular diseases such as heart failure and congenital heart disease.

The Perinatal and Pediatric Medicine Obstetrics Lab uses basic research to study how endometrial cancer develops and how trophoblast cells, which form the placenta, differentiate. Aging and inflammation of the endometrium are also among its research themes.
