Advanced Aortic Treatment Lab
Machine-translated · View original
A lab aiming to improve outcomes of aortic surgery and to develop new technologies.

AboutAbout the lab
Refining aortic treatment with two techniques.
Building on the aortic surgery developed in the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at Kyushu University Hospital, the Advanced Aortic Treatment Lab was established in 2020 to improve treatment outcomes and develop new techniques.
The aorta is the main pathway that carries blood from the heart to the whole body, and the lab treats conditions such as aortic aneurysms, in which part of the aortic wall becomes weak and dilated.
Treatment relies on two approaches: prosthetic graft replacement, which replaces the diseased section, and stent graft surgery, which covers the aneurysm from the inside. The lab has refined both without favoring either.
The lab can also perform hybrid surgery, which combines the advantages of both.
Key terms
- Aortic aneurysm
- A condition in which part of the aortic wall becomes weak and enlarges under blood pressure. Rupture can lead to sudden death.
- Stent graft
- An artificial tube placed inside an artery to cover an aneurysm, shielding it from blood pressure and preventing rupture.
- Hybrid surgery
- Surgery that combines the advantages of prosthetic graft replacement and stent grafting.
ResearchResearch themes
The lab refines both prosthetic graft surgery and stent graft surgery for aortic diseases, and presents treatment options suited to each patient. Its current research compares outcomes by surgical method.
*Illustrative imageComparison of surgical techniques for aortic arch surgery
Ongoing research compares early outcomes of different surgical techniques for the aortic arch, from which three branches arise.
*Illustrative imageComparison of treatments for ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm
Ongoing research compares open surgery and endovascular stent graft repair for ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm, through observation at multiple institutions across Japan.
