The Division of Molecular Target and Gene Therapy Products at the National Institute of Health Sciences conducts regulatory science research that contributes to ensuring the quality, efficacy, and safety of advanced drugs such as gene therapy products, nucleic acid drugs, and molecularly targeted drugs. The development of these drugs has expanded the possibility of treating intractable diseases and disorders that were previously considered incurable. It is also reported that research and development is advancing on diagnostic technologies used to assess disease conditions and evaluate treatment effects, as well as genetic diagnostic technologies for personalized medicine (tailor-made medicine), which provides the care best suited to each individual. The website registered for this lab is that of the Division of Molecular Target and Gene Therapy Products.

The Division of Biological Chemistry and Biologicals at the National Institute of Health Sciences conducts regulatory science research that helps ensure the quality, efficacy, and safety of biopharmaceuticals. The products studied include novel biopharmaceuticals with new active ingredients and biosimilars (follow-on biologics). Its goal is to develop the evaluation methods needed to manage quality risks and to take the lead in advancing standardization. The introduction of the Biopharmaceutical Sciences Lab is based on the content of this division's website.

The Chemical Safety Assessment Lab collects information on the safety of chemical substances and researches methods for predicting and assessing health effects based on the results of toxicity tests. The lab's website is that of the Division of Risk Assessment, Biological Safety Research Center, National Institute of Health Sciences. For foods, drugs, tap water, cosmetics, household products, and the like to be used safely, it is necessary to set safety standard values for the chemical substances they contain and to manage them appropriately. This research makes it possible to introduce new assessment methods into regulation and to advance the replacement of animal testing with methods that do not use laboratory animals. The lab conducts its research in cooperation with domestic and international organizations such as the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, the WHO, and the OECD.

The website registered for this lab is the page of the Division of Foods at the National Institute of Health Sciences. To contribute to food safety for the public, the Division of Foods develops methods to analyze pesticide residues, radioactive substances, natural toxins, heavy metals, and more in food. The analytical methods it develops are issued as official test methods through public notices and notifications, and are used at quarantine stations and local public health institutes, among other places. The lab also conducts research on measuring trace amounts of chemicals in food with LC-MS/MS and other instruments, as well as intake surveys using total diet study samples.

The website registered for the Crude Drugs and Natural Products Regulatory Science Lab is the page of the Division of Pharmacognosy, Phytochemistry and Narcotics at the National Institute of Health Sciences. The Division conducts tests and research on ensuring the quality and efficacy of crude drugs and Kampo formulations, crude drug resources, and the structures and biological activities of natural organic compounds. It also conducts tests and research on legally controlled drugs and plants, such as narcotics, psychotropic substances, and designer drugs. The Division takes part in drafting official pharmaceutical standards such as the Japanese Pharmacopoeia, conducts surveys and research on the drug–food classification, and works toward international harmonization of standards for natural medicines.

The Geometric Analysis Lab develops the theory of nonlinear partial differential equations on geometric spacetimes, such as the homogeneous and isotropic spacetimes of general relativity. It aims to clarify theoretically how spatial curvature, expansion, and contraction affect the solutions of these equations. The lab also works on clarifying the topological and differentiable structures of manifolds. The department's page introduces the research topic of Professor Makoto Nakamura as nonlinear partial differential equations, and that of Associate Professor Koichi Yasui as low-dimensional topology.

The Discrete Geometry Lab studies the properties of convex polytopes from both geometric and combinatorial perspectives. Commutative rings associated with convex polytopes are also a subject of study. Through this research and education, the lab also aims at applications in information science. The lab's faculty describe their research topic as algebraic combinatorics.
