Tetsusei Kurashiki, Professor
0 student voices
The Technology Creation and Collaboration Lab advances the creation of new technology through interdisciplinary integration and industry-academia collaboration, centered on composite materials engineering, reliability engineering, and engineering education. The lab works on evaluating the mechanical properties of advanced composite materials, easily dismantlable adhesive joining of dissimilar materials, reliability evaluation of items such as hydrogen tanks, and disaster simulation. Placement of fourth-year undergraduates is limited to students in the Production Science Course of the Department of Applied Science and Engineering, and the lab accepts graduate students through the Division of Business Engineering. On the lab's website, the lab is introduced under the name "Kurashiki Lab."
Keisuke Uenishi, Professor
0 student voices
The Uenishi Lab (Process Design Group) studies product design and business strategy. As manufacturing shifts from mass production and mass consumption toward diversification and globalization, the lab aims to cultivate not only skills but also perspective, in order to develop the next generation of leaders. Main research themes include business strategy for products with added services, product development and business models for increasing Life Time Value, innovation to prevent commoditization, and marketing strategy for building platforms.

Hidenori Nagai, Professor

The Process Design Area (Nagai Lab) studies technologies that use rapid PCR and LSPR biosensors to analyze pathogens and biological components. The lab was newly established in fiscal 2025, and Prof. Nagai also serves as a Senior Principal Researcher at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST). Assigned students also conduct research at the AIST Kansai Center (Ikeda, Osaka). In education, the lab emphasizes training entrepreneurial talent, including intellectual property strategy and business strategy based on experience at startups.

Takashi Nakagawa, Professor

The Nakagawa-Seino Lab aims to develop truly useful technologies through materials development. The lab works on the synthesis and development of materials such as ferrite magnets, magnetic nanoparticles, and noble metal nanoparticles. It also aims to contribute to the purpose of the Division of Business Engineering to which it belongs: training engineers and researchers who also have management sense. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name "Technology Knowledge Management Chair, Nakagawa-Seino Lab."

Atsuko Kaga, Professor

The Urban Regeneration Management Lab (Kaga Lab) studies the revitalization of cities and community building with citizen participation. Its research is based on the recognition that there is a growing need for "sustainable community building": rather than starting to plan after something happens, people consider the future of their familiar surroundings on an ongoing, everyday basis. Research themes begin when students form their own questions out of their interest in and awareness of urban planning issues. Drawing on the knowledge and experience they gain in lectures, students also take part in projects on site.

Hiroyuki Takeda, Associate Professor

The Urban Co-creation Design Lab studies and puts into practice strategies for creating, together with people, the places, things, experiences, and moments that enrich society, with cities and towns as its field. The lab holds that phenomena occurring in cities and towns arise from complex factors amid diversifying values, lifestyles, social systems, science and technology, and ethics. Specifically, it studies the role of people who engage with a region from outside, mechanisms for community building with resident participation, and the evaluation of comfort and pedestrian circulation in cities and towns. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name "Urban Co-creation Design Lab (Takeda Lab)."

Keishiro Hara, Professor

The Future Design Lab is the lab of Prof. Keishiro Hara in the Department of Business Engineering, Graduate School of Engineering, Osaka University. "Future Design" refers to designing, and putting into practice, social systems for passing on a sustainable society to future generations. Prof. Hara participates, as a faculty member from the Osaka University side, in the Mobility Systems Joint Research Chair, which studies the future of electric power with mobility taken into account. In the Industry-Academia-Government Co-creation Course in which this chair takes part, Prof. Hara serves as a mentor.

In addition to advancing research capability, the Industry-Academia-Government Co-Creation Area works with joint research chairs and collaborative research institutes to bring on-campus industry-academia joint research activities into education. These activities are called Internship on Campus (IoC). Students experience industry within the university through research activities and develop practical skills. The area also develops a big-picture perspective for business development, covering markets, customers, and roadmaps, as well as the collaborative skills needed to manage joint research. This website is a guide to the entire Industry-Academia-Government Co-Creation Course, which trains industry-oriented and entrepreneurship-oriented doctoral-level professionals, and it introduces two types: the IoC type and the Entrepreneurship type.

The 3DPTec Integrated Center is a center attached to the Graduate School of Engineering, established in April 2026 as a hub for manufacturing and creation centered on 3DP (three-dimensional printing). To the medical devices, aerospace components, and functional catalysts covered by its predecessor center, it has added future food, artificial organs, large offshore wind turbines, and art. The center is run with the cooperation of researchers from the Graduate School of Engineering, as well as from SANKEN (The Institute of Scientific and Industrial Research), the University Hospital, the Research Center for Ultra-High Voltage Electron Microscopy, the International Center for Biotechnology, and the Nakanoshima Art Center. Its mission is to pursue the underlying science, contribute to society, and develop human resources.

The Photonics Center is a center attached to the Graduate School of Engineering that provides a place for education, research, and information exchange in photonics, a field spanning a wide range of disciplines. Osaka University is known as a mecca of photonics research, and labs that cross graduate school and department boundaries, along with many companies, participate in the center. The center has advanced cutting-edge scientific research on nanophotonics and plasmonics and its application and industrialization, together with human resource development and international exchange. It is currently promoting MEXT's Photonics Life Science R&D Hub (COI-NEXT), which began in fiscal 2022 (Reiwa 4).
