The lab is built on three pillars: basic research in pathology, pathological diagnosis, and student education. In its basic research, the lab investigates how malignant tumors of the digestive organs spread and how tumor cells undergo transdifferentiation. The lab performs pathological diagnosis in the Pathology Division of Chiba University Hospital, and also carries out autopsies in cooperation with the Tumor Pathology Lab and the Diagnostic Pathology Lab. The lab strives to give lectures that make medical students and graduate students interested in pathology, and supervises many students in their presentations at the Japanese Society of Pathology.

The lab conducts clinical and basic research on diseases of the liver, biliary tract, pancreas, and gastrointestinal tract. The lab has continued under changing names, including the First Department of Internal Medicine, the Department of Medical Oncology, and the Department of Gastroenterology and Nephrology. Under the motto "Taking on unmet medical needs," the lab aims to create new diagnostics and treatments. Clinical care is divided into three groups, covering the liver, the biliary tract and pancreas, and the gastrointestinal tract, and many graduate students are engaged in research.

The Nephrology Lab conducts basic and clinical research centered on elucidating the molecular mechanisms by which chronic kidney disease progresses. A new lab that began in 2017 when its first professor took up the post, it also provides renal replacement therapy through hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis in clinical care. Even though it is an internal medicine department, its own nephrology physicians perform dialysis shunt surgery and shunt angioplasty (PTA). The lab has a system in which physicians can follow the whole course of care, from the pathological diagnosis of kidney biopsies to deciding on a treatment plan and monitoring the treatment course.

The Organ Regulatory Surgery Lab covers surgery of the liver, biliary tract, and pancreas, as well as surgery of the breast and thyroid. Renamed from the former First Department of Surgery, the lab works on research into operations for conditions such as hilar cholangiocarcinoma, which is said to be difficult to resect. The lab's motto, "Lion's heart and hawk's eyes; operate with a woman's hands," means: have the will of a lion and the eyes of a hawk, and operate as delicately and gracefully as a woman's hands. The lab carries out clinical and basic research to improve surgical outcomes and presents its results in Japan and overseas.

The Advanced Applied Surgery Lab covers surgery of the gastrointestinal tract, including the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and large intestine. At Chiba University Hospital, it practices as “Esophageal and Gastrointestinal Surgery,” diagnosing and treating gastrointestinal diseases, mainly cancer. Endoscopic treatment, laparoscopic surgery, and chemoradiotherapy are combined according to how far the disease has progressed. The lab also conducts clinical research, such as multicenter studies that collect real-world data on cancer care.

The Infection and Host Defense Lab conducts research centered on parasitology. Its research targets malaria parasites, Cryptosporidium, Toxoplasma, Trichomonas vaginalis, and the liver fluke Fasciola. In addition to basic research, the lab performs parasite diagnostic work, valuing the interest and questions that arise from each individual case. The lab strives to give medical students and graduate students lectures that spark an interest in parasitology, and frequently coaches student presentations at the Japanese Society for Parasitology.

The lab covers the study of holistic, integrated care for women throughout their lives, from the fetus to old age. Beyond childbirth and cancer, the lab aims to free all women from health problems specific to women. As the "last bastion" of Chiba Prefecture, the lab provides advanced and emergency care while pursuing basic and clinical research to develop new medical treatments. For training, the lab works with hospitals mainly in Chiba Prefecture, with Chiba University Hospital at the center, and trains specialists under a unified program.

The lab handles clinical care and research for urological diseases such as prostate cancer, kidney cancer, bladder cancer, and urinary stones. Aiming for treatments that place less burden on the body, the lab actively performs laparoscopic surgery. In addition to general care, the lab provides advanced medical care, such as prostate biopsy that overlays MRI and ultrasound images, and diagnosis and treatment of male infertility. For people considering joining the lab or training there, the lab continues to publish its "Urology Newsletter" (Hinyokika Tsushin), which conveys what the lab is like.

The lab investigates the molecular mechanisms of cancer, immunity, endocrine and metabolic diseases, and cardiovascular diseases. Aiming to bridge basic and clinical research, the lab pursues translational research that leads to practical applications. Using technologies such as ES and iPS cells, CRISPR/Cas9, next-generation sequencing, single-cell analysis, and proteomics, the lab conducts comprehensive research from cells to animal models. It is a hybrid lab where basic researchers come together with specialists who treat patients in endocrinology and metabolism, cardiology, and surgery.

The Dermatology Lab conducts research to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of cancer immunotherapy. Focusing on melanoma, which responds best to immune checkpoint inhibitors and tumor-infiltrating lymphocyte therapy, the lab examines in detail what happens in the bodies and tumors of patients who have received these treatments. In its research, the lab has long focused on inflammation, immunity, and allergy, and has put effort into training young researchers while collaborating with other departments and institutions. The lab currently also conducts clinical research on the diagnosis and treatment of skin cancers such as melanoma, with an eye toward new forms of care, including telemedicine.
