Norimichi Tsumura, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Tsumura Lab aims to analyze, record, and reproduce "ultra-high-dimensional information," centered on computer graphics and images, and to realize its applications. With an emphasis on practical, applied research, the lab values joint research with companies and patenting, and carries out its research in four groups: skin, material appearance, emotion, and biomedical engineering. The skin group does joint research with a cosmetics company, and the material appearance group does joint research with a company. The biomedical engineering group works on medical applications of image processing and measurement, in frequent contact with practicing physicians.

Yuichiro Fujiwara, Associate Professor

Associate Professor Yuichiro Fujiwara specializes in combinatorics, information theory, coding theory, and quantum information. The professor is a faculty member of the Faculty of Informatics, Graduate School, and is in charge of the Faculty and Graduate School of Information and Data Science.

Hiroshi Kera, Associate Professor

mai₂ Lab (Machine Intuition and Mathematical Reasoning Lab) studies the question of whether humans and machines understand, reason about, and compute the same problem in different ways. The lab explores this question from both sides: machine intuition and mathematical reasoning. In addition to research on computer algebra using Transformers, the lab works on learning computation through deep learning, analyzing the basis for the decisions of image recognition AI, weather forecasting, and more. The lab was launched in April 2025, when Associate Professor Kera joined the Institute for Advanced Academic Research at Chiba University.

Tomoaki Ishiyama, Associate Professor
0 student voices
Ishiyama Lab studies computational methods for numerical simulations run on large-scale supercomputers, as well as methods for operating computing systems. Methods for analyzing and visualizing the enormous amounts of data produced by simulations are also research subjects. The main application is the universe: the lab investigates the formation and evolution of various structures in the universe, such as dark matter and galaxies. The lab also works on analyzing simulations using machine learning.

Nobuyoshi Komuro, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Komuro Lab studies fundamental information and communication technologies and the development of systems that use them. Its goal is a society that enriches people's lives and minds, a ubiquitous society in the truest sense. Using IoT, which connects objects equipped with communication functions, the lab works on measuring the environment, estimating mental states, estimating indoor positions, and designing wireless sensor networks.

The Advanced Data Medical Science Lab aims to understand and overcome diseases using human genome and omics data. It seeks to uncover how hereditary diseases and lifestyle-related diseases develop, and to transform prevention, diagnosis, and treatment based on genome and omics information. The lab combines large-scale genome analysis with transcriptome and proteome analysis, functional analysis, and disease models. The lab was newly established as a lab that advances data-driven medical science, carrying on the tradition of the Department of Biochemistry I in the Faculty of Medicine at Chiba University.

The Cognitive Behavioral Physiology Lab aims to advance the science of the brain and mind. It combines techniques from many fields, including cognitive behavioral science, brain science, psychiatry, psychology, neuroscience, molecular biology, and electrophysiology, to uncover how the brain and mind function. The lab places importance on maintaining scientific mental health in a stressful, highly information-driven society, and aims for early detection and early treatment of brain and mind disorders caused by information overload. It also conducts clinical research on cognitive behavioral therapy for problems such as anxiety and obsessions, as well as brain imaging research using MRI.

Atsushi Yamaguchi, Professor

The Functional Morphology Lab investigates how nerve fibers are connected in the human brain, with the aim of understanding the mechanisms of cognitive function. The lab combines white matter dissection using the Klingler method with brain imaging such as tractography and fMRI. It has reported, among other findings, that the thalamus is a connector hub linking subnetworks of the cerebral cortex. The lab also works to clarify the pathology of cerebral infarction and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

The Psychiatry Lab began in 1907 as the chair of psychiatry and has a history of nearly 120 years. As a university hospital and general hospital, it actively accepts patients with physical comorbidities while focusing on five pillars: child and adolescent psychiatry, cognitive behavioral therapy, liaison psychiatry, forensic psychiatry, and disaster medicine. In research, the lab plans to promote collaborative research on therapeutics and pathophysiology, not only for psychiatric disorders but also for the psychosomatic field where "mind, brain, and body" overlap. The lab aims to publish results that meet the needs of clinical practice and to train physicians and researchers who can work internationally.

The Ophthalmology Lab has a history of more than 140 years and has played a central role in ophthalmic care in Chiba. The eyeball is a small organ about 2.5 cm in diameter, but it is an important one, giving us vision, which accounts for 80% of human sensation. The lab actively adopts new technologies and drugs and maintains a system that can provide cutting-edge treatment. The lab continues clinical research grounded in real-world clinical practice to help in the treatment of patients.
