Yuanyuan Teng, Lecturer
0 student voices
Lecturer Teng, in the field of Resource and Environmental Economics, specializes in regional economics, human geography, and Chinese regional studies. Lecturer Teng is interested in how human mobility and regional change influence each other, and conducts fieldwork mainly in China and Japan. The lab analyzes the resettlement of "land-expropriated farmers" in China, who lost their land and housing to urban development, and the relationship between foreign residents in Japan and their local communities.

Seiichi Sakurai, Professor
0 student voices
Prof. Sakurai, in the field of Food System Studies, researches the distribution and marketing of agricultural products, as well as rural society and economy. The main themes are the marketing of agricultural products, especially fresh fruits and vegetables, and processed foods, as well as the management of farm direct-sales outlets and the behavior of the producers who supply them. The lab also studies social ties among people in rural areas (social capital) and the diversification of the rural economy, including urban-rural exchange programs.

Yukisato Yukisato, Professor
0 student voices
Prof. Yukisato, in the field of Food System Studies, focuses on agriculture-welfare collaboration (nofuku renkei) and domestically produced wheat and barley. Agriculture-welfare collaboration is an initiative in which the agricultural and welfare sectors work together to create workplaces and places of belonging for people with disabilities in agriculture. From the perspective of food security, the lab also studies the food system initiatives needed to increase domestic production of wheat and barley. In some cases, a graduate and Prof. Yukisato have co-authored a paper based on the graduate's thesis and published it in an academic journal.

Yuki Yano, Associate Professor
0 student voices
Associate Professor Yano of the Food System Science field specializes in agricultural and environmental economics. In recent years, the lab has empirically studied consumer attitudes and behavior toward foods such as vegetables grown in plant factories and foods that use genome editing technology. The professor teaches food system science in the Department of Food and Resource Economics at the undergraduate level and in the Graduate School of Horticulture.

Erika Mukuta, Assistant Professor
0 student voices
Assistant Professor Mukuta of the Food System Science field specializes in food system science. Through field studies, the lab carries out empirical research to identify the factors that allow local food systems to continue and develop. The lab is particularly interested in economic diversification centered on farm produce stands and in the human interaction that takes place at farmers' markets.

Kazuhiko Kawamoto, Professor
0 student voices
The Kawamoto-Kera Lab studies computer vision, machine learning, and deep learning. The lab works on techniques that show in a human-understandable form what an AI based its decision on, and on methods for efficiently reusing trained models. It also studies the robustness of reinforcement learning used for robot control, and the understanding of human actions from video. The lab belongs to the Information Engineering Course in the Faculty of Engineering, the Graduate School of Science and Engineering, and the Faculty and Graduate School of Information and Data Science, established in fiscal 2024.

Shingo Kuroiwa, Professor
0 student voices
The Kuroiwa-Horiuchi Lab focuses on research in speech and welfare. The lab works on technology that reads a speaker's emotions and impressions from their voice, analysis of prosody such as intonation, and speaker recognition, which identifies who is speaking from their voice. The lab also does research in welfare, including analysis of sign language, which is used in communication by deaf and hard-of-hearing people.

Shigeo Shioda, Professor
0 student voices
The Shioda Lab studies mathematical models and probabilistic models, and their applications. The lab uses mathematical models to explain how posts spread on social media and how that relates to human behavior, the performance of communications such as Wi-Fi, and queues. It also works on position estimation and on building models that predict the onset of delirium in the medical field.

Hiroki Suyari, Professor
0 student voices
The Suyari-Mori Lab specializes in pattern recognition and machine learning, and conducts research by forming multiple project teams. Prof. Suyari's fields of expertise are information theory, complex systems, mathematical informatics, and artificial intelligence (medical imaging and language processing). The lab also studies a system that uses machine learning to automatically grade answers to written-answer questions.

Hiroo Sekiya, Professor
0 student voices
The Sekiya-Nguyen Lab aims for a new information and communication society that is mindful of energy and environmental issues, and studies wireless communication, power supplies for communication equipment, and neural networks. The lab works on communication methods that use multiple communication paths, power supply circuits that reduce power loss, and research toward making IoT networks AI-enabled. All of its research concerns the design and construction of "systems," and the lab places importance on always backing mathematical analysis with experimental demonstration.
