The Bio-Information Network Lab (Mathematical Bioinformatics Group, Bioinformatics Center, Institute for Chemical Research; the Akutsu Lab) focuses on bioinformatics and systems biology, mainly from the perspectives of information science and mathematical science. It carries out research and development ranging from theory to building systems that can actually be used. Its research is based on the fundamental theory of information science (algorithm theory and learning theory), so students can acquire both bioinformatics and information science at the same time. The lab is a cooperating division of the Department of Intelligence Science and Technology, Graduate School of Informatics.

An “image” here is not limited to a color image. It refers to any pattern of information that represents the features of an object or phenomenon, such as range images, spectral images, and CT and MR images. The Image Informatics Lab (Image Analysis Group, Academic Center for Computing and Media Studies) comprehensively studies the structure, transformation, and representation of the “images” that appear in various spaces through sensors and computational processing, in order to get at the essence of its subjects.

The Educational Informatics Lab (Ogata Lab) aims to evolve education, which has long relied on intuition and experience, into education based on evidence and technology. By making the learning process visible and capturing each student's understanding and stumbling points, the lab enables better lesson design and learning support. It also develops tools such as digital textbooks, learning dashboards, and platforms for schools. Working with educational institutions, the lab is building an environment where anyone can learn effectively, anywhere.

Kazuyuki Shudo, Professor

The Large-Scale Data Utilization Infrastructure Lab (Shudo Lab) is a lab that works on software and networks. It studies how to coordinate anywhere from a few computers to millions or more, and what becomes possible only through such coordination. The lab began at Tokyo Institute of Technology in 2008, and in April 2022 Professor Kazuyuki Shudo moved to Kyoto University. In addition to papers and conference presentations, the lab encourages putting its work before the world, for example by releasing software.

Hisayuki Hara, Concurrent Professor

The Statistical Inference Lab is run by Professor Hisayuki Hara of the Data Science Innovation Education and Research Center, Institute for Liberal Arts and Sciences, who holds a concurrent appointment as a professor in the Graduate School of Informatics. His areas of expertise are multivariate inferential statistics, computational algebraic statistics, and Bayesian statistics.

Hiroshi Tamura, Concurrent Professor

The Medical and Health Data Science Lab is run by Professor Hiroshi Tamura of the Data Science Innovation Education and Research Center, affiliated with the Institute for Liberal Arts and Sciences, who also holds a concurrent professorship in the Graduate School of Informatics. The lab conducts epidemiological studies using clinical data, centered on images, and claims data, and develops medical systems and testing devices jointly with companies.

The Organoelement Chemistry Lab aims to pioneer the synthesis of new molecules, the unknown properties hidden in each molecule, and the functions that emerge when molecules assemble, and to put forward “Full-Spectrum Chemistry” that can contribute broadly to science and technology. The lab works on molecular design using computational science, organic synthesis using cutting-edge reactions, development of new skeletons that exploit the properties of heteroatoms, and structural analysis and evaluation of spectroscopic properties using a variety of instruments.

The Precision Inorganic Synthetic Chemistry Lab aims to pioneer innovative energy functions such as single-electron transport at room temperature, highly efficient photon concentration, long-lived charge separation, magnetic exchange coupling, and overall water splitting with visible light. By precisely controlling the particle size, shape, and composition of inorganic nanoparticles such as metals, metal chalcogenides, and metal oxides, as well as their ordered spatial arrangement, the lab controls the number of electrons, plasmon resonance, exciton lifetime, spin, and catalytic activity.

The Nanospintronics Lab (Ono Lab) creates nanoscale artificial materials by combining metals, semiconductors, and other materials, and aims to control the diverse physical properties that arise from the charge, spin, and phase of electrons. In particular, the lab aims to realize spintronics, which freely controls charge and spin, the two degrees of freedom of the electron. The lab makes artificial materials by combining the fabrication of atomic-layer multilayer films by ultrahigh-vacuum deposition with nanometer-scale processing by electron beam lithography.

The Biocatalytic Chemistry Lab (Yamaguchi Lab) studies how plant hormones, which are trace amounts of small-molecule signaling substances that regulate plant growth and morphology, are produced in the plant body and how they act. Based on these findings, the lab aims to develop technologies that control plant growth and morphology using plant hormone-related genes, mutants, and compounds.
