Large-Scale Data Utilization Infrastructure Lab
Machine-translated · View original
The lab explores what becomes possible only when many computers work together.

AboutAbout the lab
Connecting computers, from a handful to millions.
The Large-Scale Data Utilization Infrastructure Lab (Shudo Lab) is a lab that works on software and networks.
It studies how to coordinate anywhere from a few computers to millions or more, and what becomes possible only through such coordination.
The lab began at Tokyo Institute of Technology in 2008, and in April 2022 Professor Kazuyuki Shudo moved to Kyoto University. In addition to papers and conference presentations, the lab encourages putting its work before the world, for example by releasing software.
Key terms
- Distributed system
- A system in which many computers connected by a network cooperate to perform a single task
- Blockchain
- A mechanism that links transaction records together and shares them across many computers, making them hard to tamper with
- Mining
- The work of creating new blocks of records on a blockchain and earning rewards for doing so
- Fork
- When the records of a blockchain split into branches partway
ResearchResearch themes
The lab's research themes are distributed systems, data engineering, distributed machine learning, and systems software.
*Illustrative imageFairness and Consensus in Blockchains
The lab proposed a new method for deciding on a single main chain when a fork occurs in a blockchain. It has also proposed a method for accurately calculating each participant's gains and losses in mining and evaluating the fairness of the system as a whole.
*Illustrative imageSocial Network and Graph Analysis
The lab works on graph sampling and social graph analysis. Its research includes measuring geographic preferences in social networks while accounting for population bias.

Ratings and reviews reflect the experiences of individual current or former students, not the lab's official views. Whether a lab has reviews, or how many, says nothing about the lab itself.
