The Biocybernetics Lab (formerly the Biomedical Engineering division) deepens understanding of the dynamic mechanisms by which biological functions arise, through research spanning medicine, engineering, and informatics. It studies homeodynamics and allostasis, modern reinterpretations of homeostasis, the property of keeping the body in an "optimal state", along with the control mechanisms behind them. It clarifies the mechanisms of diseases that arise when these become unstable, and develops the foundations of medical systems that support quantitative diagnosis.

The Energy Informatics Lab aims to create new energy social systems through IT. Building the energy society of the future requires considering what kind of system is appropriate from the perspectives of people, society, and the environment. The lab works on research in human interfaces and on research related to designing systems for a symbiotic society.

The Electromagnetic Energy Lab studies fusion energy, regarded as one of humanity's ultimate energy sources. The lab teaches the physics of plasma, the fourth state of matter, and carries out research and development in physics, systems science, and computational science aimed at making the use of fusion energy a reality. In July 2026, Professor Shinya Maeyama joined the lab.

The High-Temperature Plasma Physics Lab (Institute of Advanced Energy) uses experiments and theoretical simulations to uncover the properties of ultra-high-temperature plasma aimed at fusion. The lab also studies the principles of generating, heating, and controlling high-temperature plasma, and their applications. It is a cooperating chair of the Department of Fundamental Energy Science in the Graduate School of Energy Science, and is staffed by faculty of the Institute of Advanced Energy at Uji Campus.

The Energy Photophysics Lab (Institute of Advanced Energy) aims to pursue the fundamental principles of optical science grounded in nanoscience and their energy applications. Building on condensed matter physics, materials science, quantum optics, and device engineering, the lab carries out its own original research. The lab seeks to understand quantum optical phenomena in "extreme nanomaterials" such as carbon nanotubes and two-dimensional semiconductors, which are only a few atomic layers thick. The lab aims to realize highly efficient solar cells and a new science of light and energy.

The Soft Matter Engineering Lab (the Yamamoto Lab) works on theoretical modeling of soft matter and biological phenomena. The lab has studied various transport phenomena in complex fluids and soft matter such as polymers and colloids, mainly through computer simulation. In microscopic simulations such as molecular dynamics, handling the mesoscale and macroscale phenomena that matter in soft matter requires enormous computation time. The lab therefore aims to draw on new advances in theory to develop original methodologies useful for chemical engineering.

The Interface Control Engineering Lab studies the theme of "engineering of nanoscale confined spaces." An interface is where two phases with different properties meet, and molecules there show properties different from those in the bulk. In nanospaces such as porous materials and nanoparticles, where these effects are strong, the lab analyzes and models the behavior and structure of molecules and particles through simulation and experiments. The lab aims to link microscopic structure with macroscopic function and apply this to creating functional materials and designing processes.

The Reaction Engineering Lab (Kawase Lab) develops new reaction processes and materials based on an understanding of reaction mechanisms and reaction processes. The lab studies modeling and process development for a variety of reaction processes, and the production of new functional materials using chemical reactions. It works on modeling electrochemical processes such as fuel cells, and on producing materials by CVD. It also studies how to efficiently convert carbon resources such as coal and biomass into energy and useful chemicals.

The Separation Engineering Lab (Sano Lab) aims to establish advanced separation engineering. Separation technology is used in processes such as chemical manufacturing to purify materials and remove impurities and harmful substances. The lab develops separation operations and equipment based on various principles, including adsorption, drying, electric fields, and biological processes. It also studies applying new nanomaterials such as carbon nanohorns to separation, and process technologies for freezing and drying foods and pharmaceuticals.

The Dynamic Interfacial Chemistry Lab (McNamee Lab) studies colloid and interface chemistry. In industries such as chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and food, fine particles in liquids disperse or aggregate, and this is determined by the forces acting between the particles. When products are made or used, they are in a non-equilibrium state subject to mixing, temperature changes, electric fields, and so on, and the forces acting there change as well. The lab experimentally investigates how the forces acting on colloidal systems change under non-equilibrium conditions, and explores ways to control those forces freely.
