The Nanoprocess Engineering Lab (De-Zoysa Lab) develops optical nanodevices that make full use of nanoprocess technologies for semiconductor and metal materials. Technology that controls the structure of matter with nanometer precision underpins every industry, including manufacturing, medicine, and energy. The lab explores physical phenomena specific to photonic nanostructures, aiming to create new functions that conventional optical devices could not achieve.

The Language Media Lab studies technologies for processing language with computers and their applications. Language is a vital element supporting human intelligence, one of the most important media for communication, and also a medium that conveys knowledge across time. The lab has released many language resources, including a Japanese parser and case frames. Recently, it has been working on understanding how large language models work, as well as on machine translation and language acquisition.

The Digital Communications Lab (Harada Lab) studies next-generation wireless communication systems (Beyond 5G/6G mobile communication systems). It researches and develops the elemental technologies for realizing sixth-generation systems with even greater broadband capacity and ultra-efficient use of frequencies. Beyond theoretical research, the lab also carries out implementation and field experiments, aiming to produce advanced, practical results that contribute to society.

The Intelligent Communication Networks Lab (Oki Lab) researches and develops information and communication networks that combine high speed, reliability, and flexibility. With advances in IoT and big data technologies, every device around us is connected to networks, and diverse services are provided through processing in the cloud and on edge servers. The lab works broadly, from theory to implementation, on technologies for the advanced design and control of the network and computing resources that support these services.

The Information Circuit Architecture Lab studies the architecture of LSIs, which are at the core of information devices, and techniques for designing them efficiently. An LSI contains hundreds of millions of transistors built onto a silicon chip. Designing configurations that deliver high performance with low power consumption, and designing circuits that operate without errors in a short time, are critically important technologies. Under the motto of being "practical and empirical," the lab aims to contribute to society by building systems that are faster, lower in power consumption, smaller, and cheaper.

Kiichi Niitsu, Professor

The Low-Power Integrated Circuit Design Lab (Niitsu Lab) studies the foundational technologies for designing energy-efficient, large-scale integrated circuits, as well as the applied technologies built on them. The lab also works on semiconductor integrated circuit systems for biomedical applications and for Beyond 5G/6G wireless communication. Together with the Sato Lab and the Hashimoto Lab, it forms the Integrated Systems Engineering Division of the Graduate School of Informatics.

The Integrated Computing Lab (Hashimoto Lab) holds the motto "Creating the foundation of computing." As society comes to depend on information systems through AI and IoT, systems that handle human lives and property are required to be highly reliable. The lab pursues the design of reliable high-performance computers, next-generation computing based on new principles, and computing systems that will change our lives.

Tatsuhiro Yokoyama, Professor

The Remote Sensing Engineering Lab (Yokoyama Lab, Research Institute for Sustainable Humanosphere) develops technologies that measure the atmosphere from a distance using radio waves, and seeks to uncover the various phenomena in Earth's atmosphere. The lab develops radar technologies that measure turbulence, electrons, rain, clouds, and more using radio waves with wavelengths from several meters to several millimeters. Its targets span the atmosphere over a wide range of altitudes, from near the ground to the ionosphere above 100 km, and through international collaboration it also works to elucidate tropical atmospheric phenomena.

The Logical Life Science Lab aims to approach the mysteries of "life" and "intelligence" by integrating life science and information science. Both life and intelligence are "learning systems" that live by remaking themselves to fit their surrounding environment. The lab studies a wide range of subjects, including the human mind and decision making, the behavior of cells, audiovisual information processing and motor control in robots, and the analysis of social networks.
