Ayako Fukushima, Associate Professor
0 student voices
Under Associate Professor Ayako Fukushima, the Cultural Heritage Studies Lab researches the theory of cultural heritage conservation, methods for evaluating its value, and the history of church architecture in Japan and Asia. For undergraduate and graduate students, the lab teaches lectures on cultural heritage and practical exercises in cultural heritage studies. Before joining Kyushu University, Associate Professor Fukushima worked at the UNESCO Beijing Office, where she was involved in managing conservation and restoration projects for archaeological sites.

Tomoko Imasaka, Lecturer
0 student voices
The lab of Lecturer Tomoko Imasaka specializes in theoretical chemistry, physical chemistry, and analytical chemistry, and conducts research on toxic substances. Using quantum chemistry calculation software, the lab predicts from theory the transition energies and ionization potentials of substances such as dioxins and sarin. The lab analyzes data from gas chromatography-time-of-flight mass spectrometry, and has also created a program that calculates an original reliability factor to improve detection limits. Listed research themes include laser ionization mass spectrometry, development of mass spectrometers, and generation of ultrashort light pulses.

Jun Tsuchiya, Lecturer

The architectural materials lab (Lecturer Jun Tsuchiya) studies the texture of materials used in architecture, and the relationship between people and the local materials that make up the landscape. The lab investigates how finishing materials such as wood change over time, and how people perceive those materials. It is the lab of a faculty member in the Environmental Design Course of the School of Design.

Yoichi Kawamoto, Assistant Professor
0 student voices
Assistant Professor Yoichi Kawamoto studies urban climate, mainly from the perspective of the thermal environment. People are influenced by their surroundings and also influence them, so the two act on each other. The lab works toward forming a sustainable society that aims for comfortable living environments while reducing the burden on the natural environment. Its research themes are simulation of urban climate using mesoscale meteorological models, and elucidation of the mechanisms of urban climate through field observations.

Rei Shimazaki, Assistant Professor

The History of Western Architecture Lab mainly investigates Gothic church architecture in France and studies its construction techniques. Focusing on the triforium, a passage inside the walls of a church, the lab examines construction techniques. The lab also conducts research on the conservation and restoration of churches, and investigates architectural models and micro-architecture.

The Industrial Design Lab (Prof. Sugimoto) studies every kind of design related to industry. Industrial design takes as its subjects not only objects, UI/UX, services, and brands, but also business, management, and the structures of society. Together with companies and local governments, the lab carries out design research and practical projects on products, services, brands, regional revitalization, and the revitalization of regional industries. Drawing on about 20 years of experience designing products, services, and brands at a major home appliance manufacturer, the professor develops ideas and methodologies for the next generation of design.

Ryoichi Tamura, Professor
0 student voices
Prof. Tamura's lab studies what desirable design should be like and how design development should proceed. The lab organizes the relationships between the objects and experiences being designed and the people who make and use them, and examines them through survey and analysis. Recently, with the aim of improving people's quality of life, the lab has mainly dealt with themes related to services, older adults, and energy.

Shigekazu Higuchi, Professor
0 student voices
Professor Shigekazu Higuchi's lab aims to understand the genetic and physiological characteristics that humans have as living organisms. The lab is interested in how these characteristics are affected by differences in an individual's growth and living environment. Its main research themes are “light, sleep, and biological rhythms” and “the brain and sensibility.” The lab believes that the human characteristics revealed in this way will lead to proposals for suitable environments and lifestyles.

The Functional Engineering Lab studies the design and development of tools and devices, using childcare support, facilities for older adults, and disaster situations as its settings. In childcare support, the lab has developed an electric baby crib for infants, and it examines how motion and sound soothe infants through behavioral observation and heart rate measurement. For facilities for older adults, the lab researches a system that automatically measures food intake. For disaster situations, it researches a human-powered back-carrying device for disaster preparedness. In the researcher profile, its research fields are listed as design engineering and design studies.

Takafumi Maeda, Professor

The physiological anthropology lab studies how the physiological characteristics humans have as living organisms are affected by lifestyle and living environment. It is also interested in whether those effects represent adaptation to the environment. The lab examines thermoregulatory and circulatory responses when people are exposed to cold, heat, and low-pressure, low-oxygen environments, as well as the relationship between bathing and sleep. It aims to create healthy and comfortable environments and lifestyles for people living today.
