The Molecular and Cellular Biology Lab uses the peroxisome, one of the intracellular organelles, as a model to study at the molecular level how it is formed and regulated, and how its dysfunction leads to disease. Peroxisomes carry out many important metabolic functions, and their dysfunction causes fatal genetic diseases. The lab also aims to elucidate the issues grouped under the name "protein kinesis," including how proteins that carry out life processes are sorted and transported within cells, how organelles are formed, and how biological membranes are formed. Professor Shigehiko Tamura's primary affiliation is the Faculty of Arts and Science, with a concurrent appointment in the Department of Systems Life Sciences, Graduate School of Systems Life Sciences.

The Chronobiology Lab uses the cnidarian Hydra and the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster as its main model organisms to study sleep and circadian rhythms in an integrated way. By comparing organisms with extremely simple nervous systems to model organisms that allow advanced genetic analysis, the lab seeks to uncover the fundamental principles that give rise to these phenomena. Three questions are at the center of the research: "What are the minimum requirements for sleep to exist?", "How did sleep emerge over the course of evolution?", and "Why do animals sleep?" The lab was established in April 2023.

The Stem Cell Biology Lab studies the mechanisms that control the proliferation and differentiation of stem cells, which underlie the shaping of animal bodies, using neural stem cells in the mouse brain. The lab focuses on the secreted proteins Tsukushi and Akhirin, which it discovered and named, and aims to elucidate the molecular mechanisms that control where neural stem cells gather in the brain. The lab found that when live lactic acid bacteria are taken up by human skin cells, the cells acquire pluripotency, and reported that ribosomes are responsible for this change. The lab also conducts unique research that experimentally tests the endosymbiotic theory, which holds that eukaryotic cells arose when eubacteria infected archaea and began living in symbiosis with them.
