AboutAbout the lab
Studying every kind of industrial design in real-world practice
The Industrial Design Lab (Prof. Sugimoto) studies every kind of design related to industry.
Industrial design takes as its subjects not only objects, UI/UX, services, and brands, but also business, management, and the structures of society.
Together with companies and local governments, the lab carries out design research and practical projects on products, services, brands, regional revitalization, and the revitalization of regional industries.
Drawing on about 20 years of experience designing products, services, and brands at a major home appliance manufacturer, the professor develops ideas and methodologies for the next generation of design.

ResearchResearch themes
While developing ideas and methodologies for the next generation of design, the lab carries out design research and practical projects with companies and local governments. It aims to put its research results and design proposals into practice in society.
*Illustrative imageForms Expressing the Japanese Aesthetic of Sabi
From a product design perspective, the lab studies how to express sabi, a Japanese aesthetic, through the forms of industrial design.
*Illustrative imageMethods for Applying the Rinpa School to Design
The lab has divided explanations of 56 representative Rinpa works by expressive characteristics and organized them as design methods. As an example of a modern industrial product, a smartphone UI was prototyped, and the results suggested that the methods are useful.
Oral Cleaning Device for People Requiring Long-Term Care
A research and development team designed and developed a mouthpiece-type oral cleaning device that uses fine bubble technology for people requiring long-term care. Simply by holding the mouthpiece in the mouth, fine bubbles are released and clean the entire mouth.
Industry-Academia Collaborative Design with Local Companies
In a course run as an industry-academia collaboration among local companies, major companies, and the university, students drew on local industries and traditional crafts to create designs that local companies could sell and promote. Items that were commercialized were also put on sale.
