The Green Space Conservation Lab studies the conservation and restoration of the natural environment, focusing on green spaces in urban fringe areas and in farming and mountain villages. Through the conservation and management carried out by people, green space environments support public-benefit functions such as biodiversity, scenic beauty, the production of agricultural and forestry products, and disaster prevention. The lab's research goal is to put into practice in society conservation planning and design that benefit the relationship between people and nature, in collaboration with citizens, government, and experts. As a higher-level goal, the lab aims to educate people who can sense the beauty of the environment and communicate it.

Tetsuya Ukai, Professor
0 student voices
The Architectural Design Lab works on architectural design and urban design through both theoretical research and practice. Prof. Ukai has received awards such as top prizes in proposal competitions and the Good Design Award for redevelopment urban planning proposals and architectural designs. On the research side, the lab takes up the relationship between university campuses and the surrounding towns.

Naoyuki Oi, Professor
0 student voices
The lab of Prof. Oi studies how to evaluate urban and architectural environments from the standpoint of human psychology. Covering everything from individual well-being to the global environment, the lab investigates the psychophysiological relationship between people and their environments. Its areas of expertise are urban and architectural environmental engineering and environmental psychology. At Kyushu University, the professor is listed as faculty of the Environmental Design Course in the School of Design and of the Environmental Design Course in the Graduate School of Design.

Kenichi Tanoe, Professor
0 student voices
The architectural planning and design lab of Prof. Tanoe specializes in design planning for buildings essential to daily life, starting with housing and including educational, cultural, and medical facilities. Taking the user's perspective, the lab considers how to realize distinctive, attractive spaces in which people and environments mutually permeate each other. Its goal is to train professionals involved in architectural and community design (surveying, programming, planning, and design).

The building structures lab develops new technologies and construction methods to improve the seismic safety of buildings. It works on increasing friction in friction joints, developing new friction dampers, and developing new construction methods that use friction dampers to reduce earthquake damage. In education, the lab is in charge of lectures and exercises in structural mechanics of buildings, seismic structures, structural design of buildings, and earthquake disaster prevention. Student research supervision centers on developing technologies that contribute to building safety, proposing new design methods, and seismic performance evaluation and seismic retrofitting of existing buildings.

Tomo Inoe, Associate Professor

The Architectural Construction and Planning Lab studies the building of archives of drawings and architectural works, and the dating of buildings using steel frame members as clues (steel frame archaeology). The lab is building archives of Bangladesh Railway's railway drawings and of architects' works. Its research activities also include the corrosion resistance of steel windows and doors, and historical research on the development of glass blocks and their application in architecture. Associate Professor Asao Inoue teaches courses on descriptive geometry and drafting, design studio, building construction methods, and building production.

Masaaki Iwamoto, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Iwamoto Lab studies the design of modern and contemporary architecture in Asia. Architectural design theory of the 20th century was built around the West, but in Asia, where climates and cultures differ, distinctive modern and contemporary architecture has emerged. The lab aims to evaluate this architecture positively and to expand the possibilities of architectural design. Its current themes in research, design, and development include practicing circular design that promotes regional circulation, creative use of timber, and architectural design in hot and humid climates.

Yuki Kato, Associate Professor
0 student voices
Associate Professor Yuki Kato's lab studies the history of architecture in Japan. It studies revivalism and historical verification in early modern architecture, using subjects such as the imperial palace (dairi) and Shinto shrines. It also studies architectural drawings, such as architectural technical manuals and okoshi-ezu (fold-up drawings), focusing on builders and craftsmen and on the management and collection of the drawings. The lab also works on the history of the discipline of Japanese architectural history itself.

Kenjiro Kito, Associate Professor
0 student voices
Associate Professor Kenjiro Kito, in the field of landscape design, studies environmental design using stormwater management and green connectivity as clues. The lab examines how district-scale efforts to combine greenery and stormwater in Norway relate to legal reform, and also tries to apply the findings in Japan. In the lab seminar, topics include flood control, groundwater conservation, and land management of farmland and woodland. In design studio courses for undergraduate and graduate students, the lab targets redevelopment districts in Arita Town and Tenjin, and interviews local government officials and community development groups.

Yuka Himeno, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Urban Planning Lab (Yuka Himeno) specializes in urban planning and regional and rural planning, and studies sustainable regional design. From the perspectives of landscape and tourism, the lab analyzes regional resources. It investigates the use of public spaces, the conditions for making use of vacant lots and vacant houses, and the conditions for remote islands and small communities to continue to exist, and explores how to create plans suited to the characteristics of each region. The lab also works with community organizations and municipalities on practical initiatives that put its research results to use.
