Akane Matsumae, Professor
0 student voices
Professor Akane Matsumae's lab views society as an interweaving of "relationships" and, with a focus on people and design processes, studies the mechanisms by which relationships move and change. The lab also takes on the challenge of visualizing these mechanisms with engineering methods and evaluating them quantitatively. Including the business field, the lab carries out projects on the "dynamic design of relationships," aimed at a society of well-being, and develops and tests the methodology for it.

The Welfare Ergonomics Lab studies the products, environments, and health of people with physical impairments (especially those with limited mobility) from the perspectives of ergonomics and exercise physiology. Its subjects include not only older adults and people with physical disabilities but also people whose physical activity is temporarily limited by injury, illness, fatigue, pregnancy, or child-rearing. The lab is committed to scientifically investigating assistive devices, universal design, barrier-free design, living environments, and prevention of the need for long-term care, and to making evidence-based proposals. In recent years, it has been studying human adaptability to assistive technology.

SARANTOU Melanie, Professor
0 student voices
The Strategic Design Lab is led by Professor Melanie Sarantou, whose specialties are strategic design and social design. At the graduate level, the professor is a faculty member of the Strategic Design Course in the Department of Design, Graduate School of Design. This course is introduced as one that designs the economy and society of the future by combining design, business, and entrepreneurship. At the undergraduate level, the professor is listed as a faculty member of the Industrial Design Course in the Department of Design, School of Design.

Naoshige Naoshige, Associate Professor

The Design Engineering Lab studies the design of living spaces and the products that make them up. Drawing on experience in product planning and development of office furniture at a manufacturer, the lab aims to build ways of thinking and methodologies for making things. In joint research, the lab develops new products with manufacturers using inclusive design methods and systemic design thinking. The lab carries out education and research while moving back and forth between the practice of product design and the theorization of design.
Takafumi Katsumura, Associate Professor
0 student voices
Associate Professor Takafumi Katsumura specializes in molecular anthropology, evolutionary biology, and experimental population genetics. His research fields are listed as animal physiological chemistry, physiology, and behavior; biodiversity and taxonomy; biological anthropology; and genetics. The keywords for his research themes include experimental population genetics, epigenetics, medaka, human evolution, and molecular evolution.

Kazuya Saito, Associate Professor

The Digital Fabrication Lab is the lab of Associate Professor Kazuya Saito, who belongs to the Industrial Design Course in the Department of Design, School of Design. In the School of Design's faculty list, his fields of specialization are given as digital fabrication and mechanical engineering. In the graduate school, he is listed as a faculty member of the Human Living Design Course in the Department of Design, Graduate School of Design.

Toshifumi Saito, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Saito Lab studies how communication takes shape and how social meaning and value are formed. In addition to advertising expression, the lab covers a wide range of cultural phenomena, including film and video, contemporary art, museums, photography, literature, and subcultures. Associate Professor Saito has worked as a creative director on advertising, public relations, and cultural projects. The lab is characterized by a method that moves back and forth between practice and theory: it analyzes that practice as a subject of research and consolidates it into theory.

Yanfang Zhang, Associate Professor
0 student voices
Associate Professor Yanfang Zhang specializes in universal design and social design. After practicing universal design in professional design settings, the professor now conducts research in education. Guided by the principle of "leaving no one behind," the lab studies systems for designing and growing together while respecting diversity, as well as methods for social implementation. The lab also works on building networks for design research and education by collaborating with industry and research institutions in Japan and abroad.

Haruka Sogabe, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Design Process Lab (Haruka Sogabe) specializes in the design of places and spaces used by a broad, unspecified public (public design). Besides designing signage and street furniture, the lab works on creating design guidelines for local public relations materials and signage. Amid multiple social issues and technological developments, the lab also works on identifying points of focus and shaping them into forms that many people can understand. The lab focuses on the "gap" (zure) that arises in how the same object or space is perceived depending on one's position, and pursues research using it as a keyword for objectively grasping, analyzing, and examining situations.

Takayuki Nishimura, Associate Professor

The Physiological Anthropology Lab studies how modern humans adapt to their environments. It examines how physiological diversity in evolution and adaptation relates to genetic factors. The lab also conducts joint research with companies aimed at improving human life and promoting health.
