The Biomarker Discovery Lab searches for genes and biomarkers associated with diseases and drug sensitivity, using biological samples such as blood collected in a large-scale biobank. Because genomic information obtained from Western populations does not always apply to Japanese people, the lab builds genome reference panels, develops SNP arrays, and searches for alleles associated with disease and drug sensitivity. In addition to samples from the Medical Megabank, a cohort of healthy individuals, the lab analyzes clinical specimens from people with diseases, working to identify disease-causing genes and discover biomarkers. By combining genetic information with omics information, the lab works toward personalized medicine that aims to improve disease prevention, diagnostic accuracy, and treatment effectiveness.

The Department of Advanced Cardiovascular Medicine conducts epidemiological and clinical research on the prevention of cardiovascular disease through its work at the National Cerebral and Cardiovascular Center. In Japan, where risk factors for atherosclerotic disease such as obesity, diabetes, dyslipidemia, and hypertension are increasing, preventing lifestyle-related diseases is considered the top priority. At the National Cerebral and Cardiovascular Center, various clinical studies are carried out, including population-based cohort studies and studies of patients. The research takes place at the National Cerebral and Cardiovascular Center (Suita, Osaka).

The Clinical Aging Medicine lab is a division of the brain science research department at the Institute of Development, Aging and Cancer, and it also runs a clinical department, Geriatrics and Gerontology, at Tohoku University Hospital. The lab collects MRI images of the brains of many healthy people and conducts research using a brain imaging database. It investigates how environmental factors such as lifestyle and genetic factors affect the shape and function of the brain and cognitive ability. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name “Taki Lab / Geriatrics and Gerontology.”

The Organ Anatomy lab studies how changes in lipid balance inside and outside cells alter the functions of neural and immune cells. Focusing on fatty acid-binding proteins (FABPs), which carry fatty acids within cells, it investigates the mechanisms underlying neurological diseases, inflammatory diseases, and tumors. The research uses mice and cultured cells.

The Neuropathophysiology and Control Lab was founded in May 2018 with the aim of developing cutting-edge treatments in neurosurgery. Working with the neurosurgery department, the lab identifies what is needed at the bedside and turns it into themes for developing new treatments. The Professor and the Associate Professor are neurosurgeons who currently perform surgery, so the environment lets students work through the whole process, from finding problems to development and clinical application. The lab belongs to both the Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering and the Graduate School of Medicine, and students earn a master's or doctoral degree in biomedical engineering or medicine depending on the graduate school they enter.

The Endowed Department of Sports Medicine and Motor Function Reconstruction is built on clinical and basic research in sports medicine, pain, and the development of medical implants, and on educational activities such as surgical technique training. It is an endowed department established in April 2025 in the Tohoku University Graduate School of Medicine, and it is funded by donations from outside the university. Besides clinical research on the shoulder, knee, and ankle joints, the lab conducts basic research including biomechanics, imaging studies, epidemiological surveys, and animal experiments. The department is located in the Clinical Research Promotion Center within Tohoku University Hospital.

The Shimadzu × Tohoku University Supersulfide Life Science Co-creation Lab studies “supersulfide molecules,” in which multiple sulfur atoms are linked in a chain within a molecule. Supersulfide molecules have been found to exert antioxidant and cell-protective effects in the body, and research on them is expected to be applied to the prevention and treatment of disease. By combining Tohoku University's research on supersulfide molecules with Shimadzu's mass spectrometry technology, the lab aims to contribute to the development of drugs and foods that prevent aging. The lab's website is published within Shimadzu's website.

The lab studies the relationship between humans and the community of microorganisms living in the mouth (the oral microbiome). Using molecular biology methods, anaerobic experimental systems, and omics, the lab investigates how the oral microbiome relates to oral diseases such as dental caries, periodontal disease, and halitosis. The lab also studies how the metabolic functions of the oral microbiome affect the whole body, as well as the metabolism of cancer cells. Graduate students have included not only graduates of dental schools but also registered dietitians, pharmacists, and medical laboratory technologists.

The lab conducts education and research that clarify the interplay between oral microorganisms and host immunity, in order to protect systemic health starting from the mouth. The mouth is a front line that faces infection every day, and within it pathogenic microorganisms, the commensal microbiota, and the immune system interact in a complex three-way struggle. From the standpoint of basic research, the lab centers on immune responses and focuses on those induced by oral pathogenic bacteria. In an environment where the faculty act as coaches who draw out students' initiative and respect the individual, members come from diverse backgrounds, not only dental school graduates.

The lab studies two chronic inflammatory conditions: periodontal disease, one of the two major infectious diseases of the oral cavity, and endodontic disease, which is caused by infection of the pulp/dentin complex. The lab aims to clarify how these diseases develop and progress, and to develop regenerative therapies for periodontal tissue and for the pulp and dentin. The lab is in charge of the Periodontics Clinic and the Endodontics Clinic in the dental division of Tohoku University Hospital, and conducts clinical research and clinical trials alongside treatment. The lab belongs to the Department of Ecological Dentistry.
