Pediatric Pathophysiology (Department of Pediatrics, Tohoku University School of Medicine) is a department that aims to deliver clinical care, education, and research on childhood diseases, each at a high level. At the university hospital, pediatricians specializing in hematology and oncology, neurology, nephrology, neonatology, endocrinology, inborn errors of metabolism, and cardiology provide highly specialized care in outpatient clinics and on the wards. One example of the research the lab aims for is to start from the patient in front of them and propose previously unknown disease concepts, clarify pathophysiology, and suggest new treatments. In the professor's message, the professor says they keenly feel the weight of the words of the fourth professor of the department: "Understanding physiology through pathophysiology."

The Emergent Medicine Lab practices "serendipity engineering," which deliberately generates unexpected discoveries, and aims to extend it into medicine. Using new biotechnology that integrates biochemistry, photon science, nanotechnology, and information science, the lab aims to discover unknown biological phenomena and apply them to medicine. The lab conducts its research by combining theory, experiments, and computation. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name "Goda Lab."

As part of social medicine, the Health Policy lab deals with the laws and systems of health care, medicine, and research and development that contribute to people's health. Laws and social systems do not directly save the individual patient in front of you, but they directly and indirectly affect the lives, livelihoods, and futures of many citizens. As part of the Biobank Division of the Tohoku Medical Megabank Organization, the lab also works every day on creating value from biobanks and promoting joint research with companies.

The Image Informatics lab studies technologies for computer processing of the images used in medical and clinical settings (medical images). Great expectations are placed on information processing technologies that extract important information from huge numbers of images and present it clearly, and that combine multiple sources of information to create new image information. Its research themes are diffusion MRI, which captures the movement of water molecules in living tissue, and the modeling of human anatomical structures and the simulation of physiological phenomena. The lab's motto is to 'become an expert in image information in medical and clinical settings,' and it says it also wants to actively carry out joint research with companies and medical institutions.

The Cardiovascular Surgery field is a clinical department that treats aortic disease, valvular disease, ischemic heart disease, congenital heart disease, and more. For patients with severe heart failure, it also performs ventricular assist device implantation and heart transplantation, and its stated goal is 'the establishment of the safest and most reliable medical care, and of medical care that applies the latest science and technology.' At the Endowed Department of Aortic Disease Treatment Development, clinical research is carried out to develop advanced diagnostic and treatment methods for cardiovascular diseases, including aortic disease. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name 'Tohoku University Cardiovascular Surgery.'

The gastrointestinal surgery division of the Surgery Division, Department of Advanced Regional Medicine, builds clinical training on the front line of regional healthcare while conducting research on digestive diseases and surgery. It is a collaborative department of Tohoku University Graduate School of Medicine, and its Visiting Professor of gastrointestinal surgery is Prof. Yoshida. Students in the program can earn a degree while working as physicians at Iwaki City Medical Center. The center is a core hospital serving a wide medical area, and it sees many cases of gastrointestinal cancers such as gastric and colorectal cancer.

The Department of Urology works on cutting-edge treatment and research for urologic malignancies, with an emphasis on quality of life (QOL). It was founded in 1959 as a urology department that emerged from surgery. The department performs adrenal surgery and is also actively involved in research on the QOL of people who have experienced testicular cancer. After obtaining specialist certification, many members enter graduate school, choose either basic or clinical research, and are supervised by their academic advisor all the way through to the completion of their degree.

The Human Brain Science lab studies what brain mechanisms give rise to the distinctly human mind, behavior, and society. Using functional brain imaging, physiological and behavioral measurement, and social surveys, the lab aims to develop a brain science that serves as a "hub" connecting every academic field related to human nature. As a cooperating department of the Division of Medical Science, Graduate School of Medicine, the lab accepts master's and doctoral students, and welcomes students from both the humanities and the sciences. On the lab's website, it is presented as the "Sugiura Lab" and is introduced as a field of both the Institute of Development, Aging and Cancer and the International Research Institute of Disaster Science.

The Breast and Endocrine Surgery Lab studies surgical oncology of the breast, thyroid, and parathyroid glands. The diseases it addresses include breast cancer and other breast tumors, thyroid cancer, and hyperthyroidism and hyperparathyroidism. Its work is wide-ranging, from basic research to clinical research and translational research. Alongside research, the lab also puts effort into training the next generation of researchers.

The Gastroenterological Surgery Lab conducts a variety of research to improve surgical outcomes and trains young surgeons. Regarding it as the university's role to produce the evidence on which clinical practice guidelines are based, the lab pursues both basic research and clinical research. It carries out clinical practice and research in each area: esophagus, stomach, lower gastrointestinal tract, hepato-biliary-pancreatic, transplantation and liver, and vascular. The lab's website presents it together with the Breast and Endocrine Surgery Lab under the name "General Surgery."
