The Adult Nursing Lab studies the relationship between aging, Helicobacter pylori infection, and gastric cancer, focusing on the underlying molecular mechanisms. The lab focuses on the processes by which the gastric mucosa atrophies and changes into intestinal metaplasia, a state resembling the intestinal mucosa. The lab uses mice chronically infected with H. pylori, genetically modified mice, and gastric organoids in its research.

The Community General Practitioner Training Endowed Department was established inside Tome City Hospital in Tome, Miyagi Prefecture, to train physicians who contribute to community healthcare. Tome is experiencing population decline along with a falling birthrate and an aging population, and is said to be facing in advance the problems that urban areas will face in the future. While seeing a wide variety of diseases in the general medicine outpatient clinic, the lab educates Tohoku University School of Medicine students and junior residents in their initial clinical training. Tome City Hospital has the Tome City Visiting Nursing Station attached to it, and is described as an ideal environment for developing a new approach to home medical care systems.

The Musculoskeletal Medicine Development Department is a collaborative department placed in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Tohoku Rosai Hospital. A visiting professor from Tohoku Rosai Hospital and a full-time professor from the Tohoku University Graduate School of Medicine provide joint supervision. Taking advantage of being a front-line hospital that treats many orthopedic conditions, researchers can conduct clinical research on a wide range of musculoskeletal disorders. The department suits orthopedic surgeons who want to build surgical skills as clinicians while also being interested in medical research.

The Super-network Brain Physiology Lab (Matsui Lab) studies the question "What is the mind?" through signal transmission between cells in the brain. The brain contains glial cells in addition to neurons, and the lab investigates how signals are passed between neurons and glia. Through this, the lab aims to understand how mental functions arise. Using thin brain slices from mice and rats as well as living mice, the lab manipulates brain cell activity with light and electricity and measures the responses. The lab accepts graduate students from both the Graduate School of Life Sciences and the Graduate School of Medicine.

The Medical Zoology Lab creates and analyzes genetically modified animals to study, at the level of the whole organism, the roles of the proteins encoded by the modified genes. The lab is located in the Institute for Animal Experimentation attached to the Graduate School of Medicine. The lab has shown that USP2, which regulates protein ubiquitination, acts as a key molecule in energy metabolism in a variety of organs and influences the progression of lifestyle-related diseases. By comparing and combining its work with alternatives to animal testing, the lab also aims to develop new research and evaluation approaches that help advance the 3Rs.

The Kidney and Circulatory Therapeutics Creation Lab focuses on the kidney and the circulatory system, which maintain homeostasis throughout the body, and combines medicine, engineering, and data science in its research. The kidney regulates body fluid volume, electrolytes, toxins, and more, while the circulatory system controls blood pressure and blood flow. The circulatory system also carries humoral factors such as hormones, enabling communication between organs (organ crosstalk). Starting from questions arising in clinical practice, the lab uses disease models based on iPS cells to clarify mechanisms and test candidate therapies, with the aim of developing new treatments.

The AI Medical Science lab analyzes multidimensional medical data, such as genomes, spatial omics, medical images, and clinical information, by combining AI, mathematics, and medical science. The lab aims to clarify disease mechanisms, discover new therapies, and support the selection of treatments suited to each individual patient. Research is carried out at two sites: the Seiryo Campus in Sendai, and RIKEN in Tokyo (the Mathematical Intelligence Medicine Course of the RIKEN Joint Graduate Program). Professor Yoichiro Yamamoto also serves as a Team Director at the RIKEN Center for Advanced Intelligence Project.

The lab conducts research while working on the diagnosis and treatment of women's healthcare as a whole, including malignant and benign gynecologic tumors and endocrine disorders. In cancer surgery, the lab uses minimally invasive procedures such as robot-assisted surgery, as well as curative cancer surgery that takes fertility preservation into account, mainly for patients who are suitable candidates. In basic research, the lab has so far studied therapeutic targets of refractory gynecologic cancers and the function of fertilized eggs, and in recent years it has also put effort into translational research that connects basic research with clinical practice. The lab's website is shared with the Perinatal Medicine lab, and its staff page lists not only faculty members but also hospital staff physicians and graduate students.
