The Image Informatics lab studies technologies for computer processing of the images used in medical and clinical settings (medical images). Great expectations are placed on information processing technologies that extract important information from huge numbers of images and present it clearly, and that combine multiple sources of information to create new image information. Its research themes are diffusion MRI, which captures the movement of water molecules in living tissue, and the modeling of human anatomical structures and the simulation of physiological phenomena. The lab's motto is to 'become an expert in image information in medical and clinical settings,' and it says it also wants to actively carry out joint research with companies and medical institutions.

The Nursing Technology Development Lab studies how skin wounds heal from an immunological perspective. The lab aims to develop a wound dressing containing nano-sized lactic acid bacteria, and the work is carried out through industry-academia-government collaboration. Papers on how obesity affects the function of immune cells in the skin and on the mechanisms involved in burn healing have been accepted by academic journals.

As the field responsible for midwifery education, the Women's Health and Midwifery Lab values sexual and reproductive health and aims to realize human well-being. The lab regards sexuality and reproduction (whether or not to have children, and if so, by what method and when) as a human right that people should be free to choose for themselves. The lab studies body care suited to women's life stages, such as postpartum urinary incontinence and decreased bone density during pregnancy and breastfeeding, as well as support for families welcoming a child, including perinatal mental health. Research on support for pregnancy, childbirth, and families is carried out in collaboration with partners such as the Comprehensive Perinatal Care Center at Tohoku University Hospital.

The Infection Pathophysiology Lab focuses on basic research on the pathophysiology of infection, host defense, and clinical microbiology. Since April 2023, the lab has operated by merging the Infection Pathophysiology division of the Health Sciences Program with the Comprehensive Infectious Diseases division of the Medical Science Program, so that basic and clinical researchers work as one. Its goals are to translate basic research into clinical practice and to apply new findings from clinical research to clinical medicine. In the professor's greeting, the lab states that it puts effort into training medical researchers who understand clinical infectious diseases and microbiology from both basic and clinical perspectives, as well as healthcare professionals for infectious disease care, where personnel are in short supply.

The Nursing Administration lab studies issues related to the professionality, careers, and work environment of nurses. Through research focused on lifelong education, human resource development, and human resource management for nurses, the lab aims to contribute to further improving nurses' professionality and the quality of nursing care. The lab also examines the work environment that affects nurses leaving and returning to work, and the influence of gender on nurses. On the lab's website, it is presented under the name Nursing Administration division.

The Radiological Examination Science Lab studies the measurement and evaluation of radiation exposure from radiological examinations and protection against it, as well as quality control and optimization of radiological examination equipment. The lab works on radiation exposure of patients and medical staff, medical radiation exposure of children, and the development of new methods for measuring and evaluating radiation dose. The lab also provides education in diagnostic radiological technology and medical physics, and trains researchers with problem-solving skills. The lab is a division within the graduate Department of Health Sciences, and its faculty are also affiliated with the Disaster Radiation Medicine division of the International Research Institute of Disaster Science.

The Clinical Physiological Testing Lab studies clinical physiological tests such as electrocardiography, echocardiography, and pulmonary function testing, viewing them as important "windows" into how diseases develop. The lab pursues basic research, clinical research, and the work of making new technologies usable in clinical settings as one integrated effort. Basic experiments investigating the mechanisms of right heart failure and large-scale clinical studies are the two pillars of the lab. Going forward, the lab also aims to incorporate technologies such as AI into clinical research and to envision a new role for clinical laboratory technologists, with task shifting in healthcare settings in mind.

The Palliative Care Nursing Lab studies the palliative care needed in cancer nursing and in end-of-life care for patients with illnesses other than cancer. Established in Sendai, one of the regions in Japan most advanced in palliative care, the lab conducts education and research under the concept of "research that can be applied in the field." Faculty, graduate students, and undergraduates hold lab seminars and study sessions, aiming to develop people with broad specialized knowledge and strong research ability. Graduate students who aim to qualify as Certified Nurse Specialists in Cancer Nursing complete the required credits in lectures and practicum.

The lab conducts research using molecular biological and biochemical approaches, aiming to solve problems in endocrine diseases and lifestyle-related diseases such as diabetes and hypertension. Its work spans a wide range, from purifying and identifying transcription factor complexes with proteomic approaches to discovering new drugs for diabetic nephropathy and primary aldosteronism through high-throughput screening. The professor's greeting describes the lab as a rewarding place for students who are interested in clinical medicine but want to pursue basic medical research. Undergraduates doing graduation research in the Medical Laboratory Science major have also joined as members.

The Molecular Hematology Lab studies GATA1, which acts in the differentiation of erythrocytes and megakaryocytes, and GATA2, which acts in the differentiation of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells and immune cells. In recent years, mutations in the GATA1 and GATA2 genes have been found in hematopoietic disorders such as leukemia, but the relationship between these mutations and disease onset has not been sufficiently verified. The lab therefore analyzes, at the molecular level, how qualitative and quantitative abnormalities of GATA factors cause disease. Research centers on analysis in whole animals using genetically modified animals, with the aim of clarifying the molecular basis of anemia, immunodeficiency disorders, and leukemia.
